Somebody can/will correct me, but tOSU seems to be at the forefront of many items, specifically 'wasting' a schollie on special teams folk. Punters were usually walk-ons, kickers as well, and long snappers were HS centers that weren't good enough to make varsity. Tress was the one that (in my humble opinion) started highlighting these specialists and certainly brought forth the notion that the punt was the biggest part of the game. Now, it seems that other Power 5 teams are recruiting these specialists, so good ideas get shared around. UFM (at Florida to start), embraced the position of Mark Pantoni, who became the guru of recruiting effort/followup/spreading warmth, etc of the HS recruits. Usually, a position coach got assigned (other duties as assigned), to be recruiting director. I'm guessing that given the staff that Pantoni has at tOSU, the responsibility/level of detail, has been expanded and emphasized. Not entirely sure (since I'm a homer follower), that others jumped on the bandwagon early, or as deeply or not, but the Buckeye Way seems to be followed by more and more schools, probably limited by their football budgets and enlightenment of AD's and Presidents.
If not, then week's game with MSU was proof positive that consistent punting is truly a weapon, much like a rifle arm, breakaway speed, or quick cuts are in other positions. Go Bucks!
