The frites and onion soup are pretty good

We spent a weekend in Paris a few years ago and pretty much did the cliche' type stuff. The Louvre is amazing, and an obvious must-see. The oft-recommended Musee d'Orsey is cool too, as it's chocked full of impressionist works. We also went to Montmartre area and checked out the Sacre'coeur and the surrounding neighborhood.

We didn't make it out to Versailles, but hear it's amazing if you have the time for a longer excursion.

Have fun!

Great city except for the all the French people. Versailles was one of the better parts of Paris for me as well as the Louvre. I'm trying to remember what else I liked, but I'm coming up blank. I was drunk pretty much the whole time I was there. Best 3 credit hours and $4500 I spent.

So there I was, over in Paris
Eating wine and drinking cheese
And this guy comes up to me and he says
“ Where are you from?”
Well, I says “Yeah, I’m from Canada”
And he says “Zoot Allure, mon Dieu, you are from Canada? Do you
play hockey?”
And I says “Do I play hockey?

Well, I play Air hockey, Ball hockey, Barn Hockey, Bubble
Hockey, Field hockey,
Floor hockey, Ice hockey, Kitchen hockey, Road hockey,Roller
hockey, Table hockey, Twist hockey
And I play hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey,
hockey, hockey, hockey,
hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey all the time!
Take shots!
...

There are a couple of restaurants in the Eiffel Tower, so with reservations you can get partway up the Tower without having to wait in a line of tourists. Le Jules Verne is almost 400 feet up (you take a cool glass-walled elevator diagonally up one of the struts) and is definitely a splurge, but it has a great view of Paris and is a unique experience.

Also, I hear the wine in France is pretty good.

We walked up to the 2nd level of the Eiffel Tower rather than waiting in line. The top was closed.

My Parisian friend says the Parisians are stuck up and obnoxious. So, get drunk and eat a lot of baguette! Go see some club jazz. Try the Buddha Bar.
Then. Tell everyone who asks your Canadian. :paranoid:

Here are two worthwhile places that aren't jammed with the huge crowds like Notre Dame, Le Louvre, L'Arc de Triumph, Versailles, and Le Tour Eiffel.

Sainte-Chapelle, which is just as interesting as another church on an island in the Seine.

Link

The Rodin museum, which isn't too far from Le Tour Eiffel, is worth a trip and easily seen in about an hour.

To note some of the things yet to be mentioned...

Definitely wait until a weekend evening to check out the Sacre Coeur and the area surrounding. There will be a lot more entertainment...i.e. people playing live instruments like the accordian, artists, street performers & mime types. Tons of unique restaraunts, alley shops & pubs up there as well.

The Pompidou center was a lot of fun in the daytime...with odd shows and art exhibits/vendors. It doubles as a museum/theater and a shopping center of quirky, high-end items. Very unique structure just to look at as well.

If you liked the movie Amelie, the Two Windmills Cafe is about a block and a half from the Moulin Rouge on Rue Richechouart and still has memorabilia from the film.

I think they just re-opened the Catachombs near the Pere Lechaise cemetery (Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, etc) which are pretty awesome. They used to check you for stolen bones on the way out. Dunno if they still do or not. It's a bit of a venture from the city center, but worth the 30 minute metro ride.

The Pantheon is a cool spot if you like dead authors. It's about 12 bucks, but you can check out the crypt (has the tombs of Voltaire, Dumas & Hugo) and feels a thousand years old and about 40 degrees fehrenheit.
