Pat Tillman, 1976-2004

Not trying to be mean, but what are the standards for admission? I mean, Tillman was not, in my mind, a HOF player based upon :assuming ESPN voice: his "body of work."

Getting killed by his own troops is sad. Volunteering for the military and giving up his NFL millions is laudable. But - ya know - I thought it was for you play rather then for our off-field exploits. Anybody know the standards for admission?

Standards for nomination are surely subjective, and Tillman is behind a whole bunch of more worthy candidates in this year's ballot (of 75 players and 8 coaches), but he does have a pretty nice resume: 1997 PAC Defensive player of the year and All-American, 3-time All-PAC, 2-time Academic All-American, led ASU to PAC title (and rare consecutive bowl games), couple hundred tackles. And it would be naive to believe there isn't some consideration of a player's pro career and general name-recognition in putting together a ballot (hello Kirk Gibson).

Uh, we're talking about the College HOF--that's what he was nominated for.

Oh, and these are the listed criteria for nomination:
"Each player nominated must have: (1) received major first-team All-America recognition; (2) played his last intercollegiate game at least 10 years previously; (3) retired from playing professional football; and (4) proven himself worthy as a citizen after his football career, carrying the ideals of football forward into his community."

An easy mistake. It was only in there 4 times, twice as part of a bolded headline, and again bolded in the part that you quoted, so it was easy to miss. :tongue2:

Hey everybody, let's pile on!
