Pc builds, upgrades, advice

Advice: Don't buy a discounted RX480 reference card on eBay to match your current RX480 reference card without first asking yourself, "Self? Do I have a MicroATX case that cannot physically fit two RX480s?"

folks understood this? yikes... you actually talk like that... RX612s and reference cards and Microtax and stuff...

Looking to buy a laptop for the kid to play Minecraft on. Anyone have any experience with this? Trying to hit up pawnshops this weekend first. No idea what I'm looking for hahaha fuck.

She also wants to use mods.

I assume I'm fucked

Wish I could help...I'm actually in market for a laptop as well so that my girls (14, 9 and 7) can all use it for homework

Uh... pretty sure I saw that mentioned in one of the 40 articles I've not understood

If they don't need anything Microsoft to do homework, get a Chromebook. Cheap as hell and work great for everything we used it for

@BUCKYLE @brodybuck21

at this point unless they really need MS office, I’d look for a cheap/slick chrome book...
https://platypusplatypus.com/chromebooks/play-minecraft-chromebook/

at this point there’s no need to drop a ton of money on a laptop ... you could look at newegg/amazon/woot for refurb 2nd hand macbook air ...
Chromebooks don't support Minecraft. She will need windows for beginner coding stuff. She attended a S.T.E.M camp over the summer and fell in love with this thing called a Sphero. We got her one for Xmas so she needs windows for that as well

gotcha....wirecutter usually has decent recommendations yeah they got bought by NYTs but they still seem to be decent on recommendations... I’ve never bought a laptop myself... all mine have come from my work and that’s basically option A or B ...

I’d get any cheap Toshiba or Lenovo that runs Win 10 you can find.

Pop in/draw distance might be a problem, but don’t overthink it. You need more RAM for Minecraft than raw CPU or GPU.

And you’ll need a mouse. Impossible to play on the track pad unless you want your kids to have carpal tunnel before they’re in high school.

@alexhortdog95 @AuTX Buckeye Any thoughts?

Considered build:

$460 - Ryzen 3900x + Wraith + ASRock B450M-HDV

$139 - Gskill RGB 2 x 16gb ddr4-3200 pc4-25600

$0 - ATI R9 390 8 gb
$0 - ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 1TB NVME
$0 - 256gb NVME scratch
$0 - multiple platter HDs (5-8 gb)

$99 Meshify C

$95 - CORSAIR - CX-M Series 650W (these 3 are leftover parts)

$795 - total (due to Microcenter + free R9 / NVMEs in my collection)
Usage:

100% work rig. No gaming. Not really looking to overclock, unless it's advisable to get better value out of one of the chipsets.

My needs: 80% Lightroom 15% Photoshop 3% Other Adobe CC 2% Other

We capture between 60k-200k images a weekend (5000 competitors over 5 days), sometimes multiple shows per week.

Most of my work is rapid color correction, either individual files or full sets per competitor. So I need to fly through images with no previews (b/c 80% never get ordered), get them batch edited fast.

Moving from i7-6700hq desktop. I have a fleet of i7-8750/9750h laptops, but they tend to go to and from the events.
questions said:
Can I get away with the stock cooler for a bit? Or should I throw a Noctua in there? I'm not going to be OC'ing for awhile.

Is the 650w enough? I might someday add a better GPU in there, but I'll never be gaming on this.

Any other feedback for things I'm overlooking? Bumping up to a better mobo and dropping 100+ on a noctua?

I don't need to be future proof for the mobo. I'm going to build at least one more PC like this one in the next 12 months, and that one will probably be next gen.
