Mr. Football Watch

Each Friday, we will take a look around the state at some of the top candidates for the 2004 Mr. Football Award. Who should be Ohio's Mr. Football? Cast your vote at www.cleveland.com/hssports.

Alex Boone, St. Edward, 6-8, 320 pounds, Sr., OL:

Boone continues to show the way for one of the most balanced offenses in the state. The highly respected McCallister Scouting Report has him rated as the No. 1 senior offensive lineman in Ohio, emphasizing his "tough, competitive attitude, long arms and excellent feet." An Ohio State recruit, Boone has run a 5.2 40-yard dash and a 4.8 pro shuttle.

Rob Schoenhoft, Cincinnati St. Xavier, 6-6, 230, Sr., QB:

Another Ohio State recruit, Schoenhoft also is rated No. 1 at his position in the McCallister Report. His clutch 16-yard completion set up the winning touchdown as the Bombers defeated defending Division I state champion Cincinnati Elder, 33-30, in double overtime last weekend. St. X snapped the Panthers' 20-game winning streak in the Elder "Pit." The McCallister report describes Schoenhoft as a "drop-back gunslinger with a cannon for an arm."

Mister Simpson, Cincinnati Colerain, 5-11, 210, Sr., FB:

After overcoming a couple of nagging injures, this University of Michigan recruit got back in the flow by rushing for 128 yards and three touchdowns in the Cardinals' 55-7 victory over Middletown. He is rated second to Dayton Chaminade-Julienne's Javon Ringer on the McCallister running backs list.

Javon Ringer, Chaminade-Julienne, 5-10, 195, Sr., TB:

All Ringer did last weekend was rush for 372 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-13 victory over Cincinnati Purcell Marian. He again put his strength, quick feet and excellent vision on display.

Tyrell Sutton, Archbishop Hoban, 5-10, 194, Sr., TB/DB:

Sutton and the Knights found the going tough in a 31-7 loss to Columbus Bishop Watterson. When you have been as consistent as this Northwestern recruit has been (33 consecutive games with at least 100 yards rushing), "holding" him to 129 yards on 22 carries is considered an accomplishment. Tyrell the touchdown maker is No. 5 on McCallister's list.

Rob Schoenhoft, Cincinnati St. Xavier, 6-6, 230, senior, QB: Ohio State's quarterback problems could be over as soon as next season, when Schoenhoft arrives in Columbus. Last weekend, big Rob fired that cannon arm for eight completions in 13 at tempts, 109 yards and two touchdowns as the Bombers clinched the Queen City's Greater Cath olic League South championship with a 34-20 victory over LaSalle.

Blaine Maag, Columbus Grove, 6-1, 190, sen ior, RB/LB: Maag, Ohio's Division VI Player of the Year in 2003, was held to less than 100 yards rushing for the first time in 18 games. But the Bulldogs still prevailed, 28-0, over Crestview. Maag finished with 83 yards on 23 carries and scored twice. He entered the Crestview game averaging 176.8 yards rushing per game and 6.4 yards per carry.

Chris Reisert, Cincinnati Moeller, 6-2, 190, senior, QB: With Reisert passing for 288 yards and three touchdowns and running for a TD, the Fighting Crusaders ended a five-year losing streak to Cincinnati Elder, 27-21. Reisert, who will be in action at Lakewood Stadium on Oct. 23 when Moeller plays St. Edward, has thrown for 1,720 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Mister Simpson, Cincinnati Colerain, 5-11, 210, senior, FB: This Michigan recruit certainly has the talent, and he plays for the state's No. 1-ranked Division I team. But injuries have taken him out of the running for Mr. Football.

Tyrell Sutton, Archbishop Hoban, 5-10, 194, senior, TB/DB: After Sutton ran for 505 yards and eight touchdowns in last weekend's 61-28 victory over Youngstown Ursuline at Youngstown State University, the Northwestern recruit should be in the driver's seat for the Associated Press' coveted award.

Each Friday, we will take a look around the state at some of the top candidates for the 2004 Mr. Football Award:

Ryan Brinson, Canton McKinley, 5-10, 175, senior, RB: The Pups' all-time leading rusher, Brinson recently ran for 330 yards on 23 carries in a victory over Massillon Perry. That effort broke his own school single-game mark of 297, set two years ago. Brinson is ranked among the top six senior running backs in Ohio by the highly respected McCallister Scouting Report. Last week, he had touchdown runs of 88, 30 and 62 yards in a 28-0 victory over Massillon Jackson.

Bobby Doyle, Avon Lake, 5-10, 195, senior, RB: Doyle's impressive performance at the Ohio State summer camp was a sign of things to come. Combining a strong upper body with quick feet and the ability to change direction, he has rushed for 1,579 yards, is averaging 8.9 yards a carry and has scored 26 touchdowns for the undefeated Shoremen.

Chris Reisert, Cincinnati Moeller, 6-2, 190, senior, QB: Reisert passed for 189 yards and three touchdowns in last weekend's 24-19 victory over Columbus DeSales. He will be in action at Lakewood Stadium on Saturday night as the Fighting Crusaders take on St. Edward. On the season, Reisert has thrown for 1,909 yards and 22 touchdowns.

Rob Schoenhoft, Cincinnati St. Xavier, 6-6, 230, senior, QB: Big Rob and the rest of the Bombers are awaiting Saturday afternoon's visit from St. Ignatius. An Ohio State recruit, Schoenhoft helped St. X improve to 8-0 by completing 9 of 15 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-0 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.).

Tyrell Sutton, Archbishop Hoban, 5-10, 194, senior, TB/DB: Tyrell the touchdown maker is now Ohio's all-time leading rusher and the leading candidate for the 2004 Ohio Mr. Football Award. A Northwestern recruit, Sutton enters tonight's game at Walsh Jesuit with 8,425 career rushing yards, including 2,226 this season.

MR. FOOTBALL WATCH

Each Friday, we will take a look around the state at some of the top candidates for the 2004 Mr. Football Award:

Tyrell Sutton, Arch bishop Hoban, 5-10, 194, senior, TB/DB: Walsh Jesuit's defense made Sutton work, as he rushed for 168 yards and a touch down on 39 carries. Ohio's all-time leading rusher with 8,593 yards, Sutton enters tonight's regular-season finale against Warren Harding as the leading candidate for the 2004 Ohio Mr. Football Award. The Northwestern recruit has rushed for 2,394 yards in nine games this fall.

Ryan Brinson, Canton McKinley, 5-10, 175, senior, RB: The Pups' all-time leading rusher, Brinson tuned up for Saturday's 112th meeting between McKinley and Massillon by shredding North Canton Hoover's defense. He scored four touchdowns, on runs of 29 and 9 yards and receptions of 51 and 29 yards, and finished with 143 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Bobby Doyle, Avon Lake, 5-10, 195, senior, RB: Doyle geared up for tonight's showdown with Amherst by rushing for four touchdowns in a 44-31 victory over Westlake. He has found the end zone 30 times this season. Amherst can lay down some nasty defense. But then, Doyle seems to thrive on that type of challenge.

Chris Reisert, Cincinnati Moeller, 6-2, 190, senior, QB: Reisert had some early moments in last weekend's 41-17 loss to St. Edward. But for the most part, the Big Green Machine had him on the run. He did generate some late offense, including his own 6-yard TD scramble.

Rob Schoenhoft, Cincinnati St. Xavier, 6-6, 230, senior, QB: It wasn't pretty, but Big Rob and the rest of the Bombers won the battle of ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^the Jesuits, 13-10, over St. Ignatius. With St. X's running game showing the way, Schoenhoft found his way through the raindrops for 13 completions in 30 attempts, 174 yards and a touchdown.
