Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

Penn St fan: He was just a football coach!
Same Penn St fan: Oh how I remember the days where I was so lucky to be graced by Joe's presence. I can recall them all fondly....for, who wouldn't remember the time they met Jesus himself.

Or: Joe and his football program single handedly propelled a small rural college into becoming the bestest public university in the country.

I guess there's an ESPN "documentary" about Penn State and Jerry Sandusky and all the happenings from 10-12 years ago. The cult is not happy about it.
Thread starts with the article about that Hodne turd and becomes the article about how ESPN is just jealous that Penn State has been successful by "doing things the right way."

If not ruining anyone's weekend is "doing things the right way" count me in on preferring to do things the wrong way.

Same thread as before. But it seems as though they're getting better at a civil discussion. It used to be "Joe knew!" "No way, you suck!" "No YOU suck. Here's proof..." "Your proof is fake news. Here's proof that you peed your pants!"

But they're getting better.

Our old buddy crm114psu (he can't be a real PSU fan, by the way) says, "I found this post on another site, from a respectable marsh wiggle." He then posts about how Penn State fans tend to think they're better than everyone else. If you've ever spent any time on a PSU fan forum, you'd know what he's talking about. There's Paterno, then his wife and family, then closest friends, then farther friends, then PSU alumni, then PSU fans, then everyone else. I may be forgetting someone, but you don't disrespect the group ahead of you. I think that's why firing Paterno was such a terrible thing - not that he did or didn't do anything wrong. He was above you, probably by a lot. So don't you dare say anything about him, unless it's "Praises Joesus!"

Here's an example of someone with a rational discussion:
The "thinking we're better than everyone else" mindset goes hand in hand with the decades old, spoon fed narrative. When you say over and over, for 40+ years, how you as an institution are doing things "the right way" it is natural for those associated with said institution to then think the others are NOT doing things the right way. Simple human nature. No nefarious or evil intent whatsoever, just the inevitable conclusion of the situation really, now S L O W L Y being undone with the passage of time.
1) While I'm sure some PSU fans thought that PSU was "better than everyone else", I think a more realistic take is that PSU did (or at least tried very hard to) do it "the right way." That is not to say they are the only school who endeavored to do that, but some schools clearly did not. I will point out that PSU is now the ONLY D1 school that has never had a major NCAA infraction (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search?types=major&q). I think that speaks volumes about how PSU handles things and it IS different than many schools.
A bunch of people hang their hats on "Penn State does things the right way". That website I guess shows all of the major NCAA violations.
The unjustified sanctions that PSU imposed upon themselves related to Sandusky were NOT NCAA infractions. PSU broke no NCAA rules in that case.
I like that one. I remember where I was (Niagara Falls, NY surveying a pipeline) when I was listening to the radio and hearing the sanctions being read by Mark Emmert. Did Penn State give him their self-imposed sanctions to hand to them?
Agree and disagree. At the time, the NCAA powers were Oklahoma and a few SEC teams that were clearly cheating and not acting in the interest of the student athletes. the NFL was replete with kids that couldn't read or write but graduated from their university. Joe was the only major coach I know that really hammered the NCAA on doing it the right way. That wasn't done by Schembechler or Woody or Switzer.

There are tons of NCAA rules that were ushered in by Paterno. I can name several. You should go back and listen to Joe's presentation to the BOT after winning a national championship.

While all programs weren't dirty, most were. But I feel like your post is from someone that didn't follow college football in the 70's and 80's. Paterno was the standard-bearer for better governance and got a lot of arrows pointed at him as a result.
A lot to comment in that post. Okay - Paterno "hammered" the NCAA on doing it the right way." I find that idea funny. And I don't believe it for a second.
"Tons of NCAA rules that were ushered in by Paterno." I'm interested in hearing what they are. Except you can take the idea that he got instant replay into college football and shove it in your dong hole. That was coming regardless of whether Paterno chased down some referees to yell at them.
Then he says most were dirty. You're going to need to back up those "fax" with more "evidence", Bub!
Paterno did exactly as he should have done by NCAA rules then, and now (after a several-year investigation). You report it to your boss and to someone outside the sports reporting structure.
I still say this one gets me. If someone came into my office and said he saw another guy acting inappropriately with a child, I'm supposed to call my boss??? My boss would hopefully say, "You idiot, did you call the police? Did you go find the kid and try to make sure he's okay?" Or, I guess the right thing for him would be to say, "Okay, I'll let my boss know." Eventually, we get to the top of the mountain. Then............... I don't know what and then...
Even if a crime happened, it had nothing to do with PSU or PSU athletics and certainly wasn't an NCAA issue.

But that isn't the point; the point was to show that while I don't endorse PSU folks running around saying "We are better than other schools" there is actual DATA that shows PSU historically has and currently does do things differently than other schools with regards to NCAA rules (i.e. PSU follow the rules).
Ha - "even if a crime happened." Another guy who isn't ready to accept that a crime even happened.
Did Nike ever put Joe's name back on their daycare facility?
That quote is from crm again. I think he's making a point, but I don't know what it is.
But my point is why would Nike's daycare facility have Joe Paterno's name on it? Did Joe Paterno invest his own money or start a fundraising campaign for Nike's daycare? And why was Joe Paterno's name on the Big Ten Championship trophy? At the time of its creation, he had won 3 big ten championships in 19 years. 3. Ohio State, at that point, had won 7 championships in the previous 10 years. (3 of those were ties, and tiebreakers probably shouldn't go to Ohio State.) So 4 outright championships for Ohio State in 10 years. And you want to honor the guy who coached 3 championship teams in 19 years. Or was that the Big Ten's way of saying, "we're sorry we told our referees to screw you out of probably 16 more championships?"

That thread is like a train wreck. I can't stop watching it.
It's up to 17 pages now, and PSU2UNC is winning the internet. He's arguing with WHCANole, who seems to make some sense. But PSU2UNC has decided to double-down on Sandusky's innocence.

If Jerry didn't do anything wrong, then Joe didn't cover anything up, and the whole world will praise us for being as awesome as we know we are.
