Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I hope that when I grow up I get filled with immense jealousy for something for pretty much no reason.

I like the part where they whine that Ohio State or Michigan loses in the Rose Bowl every year. Oh yeah - that's because Penn State has won it every year since 1993... I forgot.

Wait... Penn State is 0-3 vs USC in the Rose Bowl?!?

Last I checked, Ohio State won 2 Rose Bowls since Penn State's last Rose Bowl win.

The last season Ohio State lost a Rose Bowl was 1984. I'm not sure what astounds me more, the cult's utter ignorance about the most basic and easily verifiable FAX! or the complete arrogance and self-confidence with which they publicly display that ignorance.
For them, history stopped after the 1995 Rose Bowl, when Joesus prayed upon the mount and became Radient in all his glory, and afterwards only includes the ring of pretty good years (except, of course the games in which the vile referines conspired to rob them of their deserved NCs!). In their minds, the last time Ohio State legitimately was in the Rose Bowl is 1984.

Aside from 99% of them believing that they would roll the Big Ten every year, almost every one of them thought that Ohio State-Michigan would become an afterthought. They were dead certain that both schools' biggest game of the year would inevitably become their annual loss to ped state.

They didn't even manage to become the second biggest game for any team on average, often failing to crack the top-3 for OSU (UM, MSU, OOC, UW or PSU) & UM (OSU, ND, MSU, then UW or PSU).

Don't have time to LBJ the numbers, but I'd bet that most years since 1993, Wiscy has been a bigger game on everyone's schedule.....and Sparty probably almost as frequently as the pedsters.
Right, they've been in the mix for "other troublesome team in the B1G" but not nearly as consistent as the Cheese or Dantonios.

There was a significant stretch of the 00s where they were firmly in Purdue territory in many ways, including OSU disruptions.

I got some time. OK - I'm not going to go schedule-by-schedule. How about year-by-year?

Michigan State 5-3
Wisconsin 3-5

1997
Penn State 6-2
Wisconsin 5-3
Michigan State 4-4

1998
Wisconsin 7-1
Penn State 5-3
Michigan State 4-4

2002
Penn State 5-3

2010

2016
Penn State 8-1
Wisconsin 7-2
Michigan State 1-8

2017
Wisconsin 9-0
Michigan State 7-2
Penn State 7-2

So.. counting the number of times Wisconsin had a better record than Penn State, and the number of times Penn State had a better record than Wisconsin:
Wisconsin - 12 (93, 98, 99, 03, 04, 06, 07, 10, 13, 14, 15, 17)
Penn State - 11 (94, 95, 96, 97, 01, 02, 05, 08, 09, 12, 16)
Ties - 2 (00, 11)

Pretty damned close to 50/50.

Same deal with Michigan State and Penn State:
Michigan State - 8 (99, 03, 04, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15)
Penn State - 16 (93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 00, 01, 02, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 12, 16)
Ties - 1 (17)

2:1 in favor of Penn State. But when did Dantonio come in? 08-ish? (Never mind - it was 2007.) Since 2007 it's 5 to 5. Sure, the cult would say that they're due to the sanctions. I guess that's fair.

So, in conclusion, by these numbers, Penn State is a bigger game than Wisconsin about half the time, and a bigger game than Michigan State about 2 of every 3 years. If you want to "dominate the conference", you might want to be a bigger game than Wisconsin 65-90% of the time, and you shouldn't even be asking about how you compare to Michigan State.

Pro-Tip Pedsters.
If you want to be at the bottom of the win-loss threshold and still in The Conversation, don't schedule like scared bitches.
You can't schedule bottom feeders like Pitt and lose... then complain when we beat OU at their house.
2014-2016 minimum threshold was 1 loss. You failed to meet that threshold.
2017 may be 2 losses. Remains to be seen. And since one of our losses would be to a Playoff-bound OOC Champ, and another wtf loss ... yea we're still on the fringes of that discussion if we win one of the strongest conferences in last 5 years.

Committee is a lot more forgiving of mulligans when your Athletic Department isn't cowards. If you want to schedule cupcakes, you sure as hell better go undefeated.
But hey... we already know the Integrity level of your AD and University in general. You don't even have the testicular fortitude to protect young children so... the bar is pretty low.
