Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I heard he never cashed his paychecks. Doing things the right way.

You know who actually didn't cash his paychecks (wife found a drawer full of them once), passed all his raises on to his assistants and was the lowest paid coach in the Big Ten his last few years?

This guy. That's who!

Can one of the older BPers tell me how many animated corpses were being paid seven figures back in the day? Thanks a bunch.
I think this bullshit was the start of my hatred of the cult. Who the fuck brags about stuff like this in the 90s? Right away you knew it was a) perpetuated by the pants-shitter himself and b) total bullshit. Penn St structured his salary so the 1mill was all the public could see. It was all an act.

It appears to mean that there is an endless supply of cash in Columbus for priorities in education.

They're just arrogant because it was recently reported by media around the country that Penn State's endowment received a $1.1B windfall to push it past $5B, and the President and trustees have pledged that most of that will go to addressing affordability issues, the first major initiative being that the university is now tuition-free for any in-state student who qualifies for a Pell Grant (family income <60K).

Oh wait, that was THEE Ohio State University.......their Buckeye Overlords on the football field and off it.

And they went to the legal mattresses to keep his salary secret.

Why fight to keep something like that secret? It’s so stupid. That’s how badly Paterno needed to have his phony image upheld.

Exactly. It had to be more than just "he didn't cheat and graduated his players." It morphed into this whole sick thing where he had to be presented as a perfect human being. Can one really be shocked that he refused to allow it to become public that a pedophile had been operating within his realm of perfection, that he wasn't perfect and that his program wasn't pristine in every way.

Penn State's official line was that his salary was a few hundred thousand a year, when many coaches had crossed the $1M line. A Pennsyltucky newspaper made an FOI request to find out his real salary, and ped state lawyered up like a motherfucker to fight the request. I think they literally amended the university's charter through the legislature to make it something other than a pure "public" university in order to shield it from the FOI laws. But no, Paterno certainly wasn't calling the shots there. Not at all for one minute.

Apparently, they even tried to say that his salary was a "state secret." I shit you not.

Don't forget the part about them supplementing his income with several interest free "loans" from the university, that they forgave, none of which were recorded as State or Federal income. This is truly success with honor.
