Penn State Cult (Joe Knew)

I know it's funny and all to keep making that reference but it makes me uncomfortable to think we are partaking, in any small way, in minimizing the impact this had to the actual victims.

Mike Mauti is going to have to live with the scars of this for the rest of his life and I don't think that is anything to laugh about.
That whole speech is what confirms Paterno being a monster to me. The cult can explain away all the bullshit they want, but these things can not be disputed:

1. Paterno was told Sandusky may or may not be messing around with children, sexually. He was told this well before this speech.
2. The best version, as far as Paterno or his supports are concerned, is that the police investigated this.....his superiors investigated this......and it was found to be false. We know that's not true, but let's pretend for a second that an actual policeman and not the Vice President of Finance who oversees campus police investigated the accusation thoroughly, and was found it to be lacking any substance.
3. Years later, actual evidence and actual reporting now has all but confirmed that, yes....Sandusky did do something to these kids way back then. The rumors that were thought to be false are actually true.

When faced with the new information, Paterno has the gall to question to the world if these kids were actually victims or not. Any person with a functioning brain will see point number 3 and realize, "Holy shit.....point number 1 actually happened and point number 2 must be faulty." And I'm sure Paterno thought that, too. But that's damaging to his brand, so instead we question the validity of these victims, or whatever you want to call them. I don't need a hand written letter from Paterno to whoever detailing how to cover things up at that point. He's already cemented monster status to me.

Well sir, all I can say is that you obviously never had a completely unhealthy amount of your self esteem tied into being a fan of the football team coached by Him.

If you had the privilege of validating your existence off of a marketing campaign as thoroughly compelling as "success with honor", I dare say you may be signing a different tune.

Believing in the myth of Joe Paterno allowed us to completely delude ourselves into thinking we really were better and morally superior to everyone else on the planet and I, for one, shall be damned if I am going to let a thing as minor as covering up serial child rape take that away from me.

I need to feel special. I have a deep, gnawing, dark, insatiable need to feel that I am better than you. Worshiping Joe Paterno like a god fulfills that need for me. It's just that simple but you are just a sheep who believes whatever the media tells him so I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Good day to you sir.

Jets trade Christian Hackenberg to Raiders for conditional draft pick

Quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who never entered a game in two seasons with the New York Jets, was traded Tuesday to the Oakland Raiders, ending an odd and disappointing tenure that leaves a wake of questions.

The Jets will receive a 2019 conditional seventh-round pick for Hackenberg, who will be remembered as one of the biggest second-round disappointments in recent NFL history.

The Oakland Raiders waived Christian Hackenberg on Tuesday after acquiring the quarterback in a trade with the New York Jets last month.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the roster move and noted the Raiders now get to keep their seventh-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft, which was conditionally sent to New York in the deal.

Christian Hackenberg Released by Raiders, Negates Offseason Trade with Jets

As regards any single player, he has the most mixed legacy of any Penn Stater in recent history.

I appreciated his efforts in 2013-2014. He was often good and occasionally great (most notably, 2013 vs. Wisconsin - after that game I would have bet good $ on him being a future NFL starter).

But he quit like a dog in 2015 when things became more difficult (O'Brien gone and the OL a mess). And that rubbed off on the team as a whole. And the Gator Bowl finale: he gets injured in the 1st half, which fine. But he was utterly uninterested in supporting his teammates in the 2nd half, and then he took undeserved cheap shots at James Franklin in the post-game.

His NFL career is likely done. Some of that is mechanical. But I feel MOST of that is because of his lack of mental toughness. He was unable to adapt mentally at PSU when things got rougher. And that trait carried forward to the pros. The sky simply isn't sunny all the time. Hackenberg still hasn't learned that.
