Remember who Ohio State was in 2005. Sure, they stood toe-to-toe with the team that would later win the national championship. But Ohio State couldn't claim to be the obstacle holding anyone back. Ohio State had won 1 Big Ten title the previous 6 years, and titles weren't exactly overflowing from Ohio State for the 20 years before that, either.

If anything, Ohio State used the 2005 season to start THEIR new rule, despite losing to Penn State. I probably don't need to go through the results year-by-year, but Ohio State won 6 championships outright (and tied for 3 more) in the 14 years starting in 2005. Penn State won 3.

And if this game was the greatest upset of all Penn State history, either Penn State doesn't get many upsets, or they're just always favored to win games.

This is all true, but wasn't PeeSU utter dogshit from 2003-2004? In those 2 seasons, they only had 3 wins against non mid-majors, and 2 of those wins were against Indiana.

I read an article, can't remember where, that states one of the big reasons for his struggles is that, mechanically, he kind of came unspooled after O'Brien left and he's never really recovered. When you look at McSorley, who followed him, that's a guy that really relied on his athleticism a lot and was prone to some pretty awful "quarterback" plays when he couldn't improvise. Kind of an indictment on Franklin and his coaching staff...

It's been discussed in the AAF thread. He looked pretty bad the first 2 games. The cult rationalized by saying his receivers couldn't catch and his o-line was terrible and he was just on a bad team. After a couple of interceptions in the first half of Game 3 (plus another that could have been intercepted) and no points, he was benched for Mettenberger, or something like that. New QB quickly led the team to a touchdown, and made it a game. I think the halftime score was 13-0 or 15-0, and the final was 21-17. It must have been 15-0, because I can't figure out how to get to 13 without 1-point conversions. Anyway, yeah - if Hackenberg gets any more playing time, it'll be because of injuries to other quarterback(s).
