AMEN!!! I can't wait for OSU to be a perinial power like a USC or an Oklahoma and I believe this class may be the start of it....

I am DAMN excited.....

Well, USC hasn't had an 8-4 season in three years and doesn't look to be returning there anytime soon. Top that with 2 straight national titles. THATS the kind of power I want OSU to be.
Sorry to beat an off-topic horse, but I think having the best winning percentage over the last eighty years punches OSU's ticket to the "perennial contenders" club.

Plus, I think the fact that Ohio State can be ranked in the top 10, go 8-4 and likely end up ranked in the top 10 at the start of the subsequent season is a pretty good sign of how much a contender Ohio State is considered to be.

While I agree OSU has what seems like an overwhelming amount of talent going into this season, I would just like to see us winning more big10 titles and competing for more national titles on a more regular basis.

Well, in the last 12 years, Ohio State has been in the hunt for more hardware than either USC or Oklahoma. A certain head <S>choke</S> ...err coach just never finished the job.

PS - could someone please split this? Thanks!

Talk to us at the beginning of this season and we'd say we haven't even had a 3 loss season in three years. We were 34-2 over two years. Then the whole team and a handful of backups were drafted.

Took half a year, but they're now primed to push USC next year.

...and they LOST at least five games each year in the six years before that.

Three good years does not a perennial power make.
With Cooper we were headed down that road. I remember him going 6-5 then 8-4 and then Tressel took over with a 7-5 record, then two wonderful years and back to 8-4. I guess what I mean is I would like to get back to the 90's type of OSU buckeyes to where we dont really have to rebuild(aka 2004) but more or less just reload.

I guess I buy into the ESPN "USC has so much talent at every position blah blah" a little too much.

I don't really think of this past season as a rebuilding year. To me rebuilding means that the players that you have aren't good enough yet to compete for the NC. We had a bad 3 game stretch where nothing was clicking, but I think after the last 2 games the team proved that they could play with anyone. IMO if the oline had played the whole season like they did against SCum and oOSU we would have been in the Rose Bowl.

So you don't think USC has 4-loss potential with all of the personnel and coaching changes the team will make? Especially if they lose Leinhart.

Say they do lose four games, are they not the 'perinial' power you assert them to be? I mean, OSU was one game from being in back-to-back National Title games and had the chance for two straight undefeated seasons. USC wouldn't even have sniffed that piece of the title if we won our game v. Michigan, so again, with NO change in record for USC, would it change their status?

What about Chokelahoma? They got rolled up by USC and LSU, respectively. They didn't even win the Big 12 the year they lost to LSU. How does two straight Fiesta Bowl wins compare to what these idiots were doing during those years?

So, let's look at the first decade of the 21st century. Who has had as much success as OSU? Well, I can count them on one hand. USC, Oklahoma, Miami, and JUST MAYBE LSU. Michigan has won 1 bowl game in this decade and it wasn't a BCS game. Texas hasn't won their confrence in how long? Florida State hsa been good but not great in the 2000's. I'd say OSU has been the fifth most dominant team, at the least, over the last five years. My vote personally is #3, behind Miami and USC.

I guess I'm just wondering how you qualify perennial power. How many are there in a given year, and if it changes because of one 8-4 season, how do you expect your opinion to hold any weight at all?

we are def a perennial power....just imagine the announcers introducing us playing a preseason game against some chump team...they'd def. introduce us as 'perrenial power Ohio State'...and it's true...look at us thru the 90's...when i was in school we were always top ten...and now the NC.....anyway a perennial power is just a team that has the potential to be #1 any given year..and that's us.....it's a big program team that you always have to be nervous about playing...and that's us...
