I heard a great Rose story on the radio in Portland today

From a guy who spends time at the track with him.

First of all, Rose takes brown paper lunch bags with $30,000-$40,000 cash in them when he goes.

So we're off to a pretty good start right there.

One day they are sitting in the off track betting area watching races from all over the country and a kid comes up to him and asks for an autograph. Rose says, "I'm gonna do you one better," and gives him $100 and says, "Tell your old man to put this on the 1 horse at Indiana Downs." They do, everyone in the OTB watches the race (they know what's going on) and the horse loses.

The kid walks back over and asks if he will sign the losing slip. Rose says, "Hold on, we're gonna find you a winner." Gives him another $100, another tip. This time the horse gets out to a big lead and hangs on to barely win. The place goes crazy. The dad wins $8,500. They try to give the money back to Rose but Rose says, "No, no, no, you guys keep it, go to Toys R Us or something." And he gives the kid an autograph. Then Rose hits a trifecta and wins $25,000. The place is going berserk now.

...a couple hours later all that money is basically gone. Rose looks at his friend and says, "God damnit, Andy, we need to change our luck somehow, go find me another kid." And they start laughing.

Are we still in the dark ages where betting is a no no? This man is a great person, and needs to be in the HOF. But I know I'm :tibor:

Pete was my childhood hero. I watched or listened with anticipation for his next hit or head first slide. It is a sad state of affairs for the leading hit-man in baseball. But Pete is and was not what I thought he was.

All of that being said, it is time for Pete's records to be recognized. The Hall of Fame is iffy for me as there are many scoundrels in the HOF. I do not think he should be reinstated to the active managerial role or anything in an official capacity.

Topps pulls Rose's name from cards:

Pete Rose is baseball?s all-time hits leader, but not according to this year?s collection of Topps baseball cards.

Rose, who was declared permanently ineligible from baseball for allegedly betting on games, has had his name wiped from the back of this year?s cards.

Clay Luraschi, a spokesman for Topps, called the omission of Rose ?a simple decision? but declined to elaborate. When pressed, he repeated that it was ?plain and simple? that Rose?s name should not appear on cards.

If that Topps exec wants to make a social statement and omit Bonds, Mcguire, Sosa, Clemens, Palmero, and every other steroid user, wife beater, drunkard, and just plain asshole then fine. But to single out Rose as a player makes him look like a douche.

Pete Rose at Christ's Church of the Valley

Pete Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time career hit leader, will return to Philadelphia and appear at Christ’s Church of the Valley on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Rose will appear live and be interviewed by Senior Pastor, Brian Jones during each service at 9:00, 10:15 and 11:30 AM.

This event is free and open to the public. Pete’s visit marks his return to the Philadelphia area, where in 1980 he helped lead the Phillies to their first ever World Series championship.

Rose is recognized as one of Major League Baseball’s all-time greatest players. He holds the league’s records for most hits (4,256), games played (3,562) and at-bats (14,053).

In 1989, he was permanently banned from baseball (including the National Baseball Hall of Fame) as a result of allegations that he bet on baseball games (a violation of baseball’s rules) while manager of the Cincinnati Reds. In 2004, Rose admitted these charges were true in his autobiography, My Prison Without Bars.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Rose’s banishment from the game as well as the 10th anniversary of his admission of guilt. Yet, while players who took performance-enhancing drugs have been welcomed back to the game, Pete still remains an outcast. As someone who preaches weekly about the need for “second chances,” Brian Jones believes that it’s time Pete was offered one.
