Ohio State basketball team picks up commitment from Garfield Heights junior David Bell

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - Garfield Heights junior David Bell orally committed to play basketball for Ohio State on Monday night, Bulldogs coach Sonny Johnson confirmed.

Bell, a 6-foot-7 forward, is averaging 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.6 blocks this season. He made the non-binding commitment one day after visiting Ohio State on Sunday for the Buckeyes-Indiana game.

Bell also had offers from Kent State, Cleveland State, Dayton, DePaul and Miami (Ohio), Ohio and Wright State. He is rated three out of five stars by Scout.com and is unrated by Rivals.com.

He averaged nine points and six rebounds last season before suffering an injury late in the year.

Is this kid a sleeper or tearing up the AAU/HS circuit? I was looking at his other offers.

Potential player or just a body (if anyone's from Cleveland and watched him)?

Good find if he's a late developer.

They definitely needed another big. I hope his offensive game continues to develop. We don't need another offensive project.

I hope they snag a SG (Leak) from Whitney, Illinois and he convinces Okafor to join him in Columbus. "Slam" Thompson needs to get in the ear of those Whitney kids.

"Slam Thompson" needs to get in his own ear about playing with the confidence to compete at this level.

Bell looks like straight depth to me, with the possibility of contributing as a junior/senior. His offensive game looked OK but not dominate for someone his age committed to OSU. I know Amir struggles offensively but his raw talent, size, and defensive presence warranted a scholarship from a top tier team.

I guess when I saw Bell had recently grown 2-3 inches, I had hoped for a more skilled player. Instead I saw highlights of essentially a 6-7 center that played like a center.

He has the mold of a Juwan Johnson and I hope he develops into that though.

Lord knows we need some bigs... Never heard of this kid, however I'm happy to add some size (although 215 isn't really size... If the kid is really only 215 pounds he needs to bulk up to see some pt at forward in the big ten)
