WALTHAM — Jared Sullinger knows someone is always watching from above.

Yesterday, it was his father, James “Satch” Sullinger, observing from the second-floor perch in the Celtics’ practice facility.

“It’s all right,” said Sullinger-the-younger of dad over his shoulder.

“He don’t coach me no more,” he added. “He’s my father finally. Thank the Lord. But, yeah, he’s my father finally.”

Satch did instruct his son growing up and at Columbus (Ohio) Northland High School, and things seemed to turn out pretty well. Son is having a breakout second year in the NBA after back surgery cut short his rookie season, and dad is pushing a book, “Winning with Purpose.”

“Was he tough as a coach?” said Jared. “Do you see his face? Hell, yeah, he was tough as a coach.

“At times my freshman and sophomore year, I had to understand that he was coaching through me to other people, so me and him used to bump heads all the time. But now we’re fine.

“It’s kind of cool. It’s always been my dream. To see him upstairs watching me practice at an NBA level is pretty cool.”

Satch sits in on C's practice

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Boston Celtics second-year big man Jared Sullinger is no stranger to having his father watching his practices. The way the younger Sullinger sees it, at least he can't boss him around any more.

Satch Sullinger took in Boston's practice Thursday from the balcony outside Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge's office. Asked about having dad watching from high above, Jared Sullinger playfully noted, "He doesn’t coach me any more. He's my father, finally. Thank the Lord."

Satch Sullinger coached his son at Northland High School in Columbus, Ohio. He stepped down in 2011, in part to watch Jared Sullinger's escalation to the pro game (starting with his two seasons at Ohio State).

Since his Dad didn't have a whistle, Jared Sullinger relented that it was actually pretty neat to have him at practice Thursday.

"It's kind of cool," said Sullinger. "It's always been my dream and to see him upstairs watching me practice at an NBA level is pretty cool."

Jared Sullinger is averaging 13.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists over 25.6 minutes per game this season. He tops the Celtics in plus-minus (plus-51 overall) and has been the most consistent two-way player recently. After back surgery ended his rookie season in January, even Sullinger admits his steady sophomore play has been a bit of a surprise.

Yeah, this is dumb article; however, they did pick Sullinger as Right Guard: Jared Sullinger (6-9, 280), Celtics

The All-Gridiron Team: NBA players who would dominate on the football field

The All-Gridiron Team
The “Which NBA players could make it in the NFL?” topic comes up from time to time, like when Heat forward LeBron James tweeted in October that he “[wants to] play in one NFL game before it’s over.” At the time, The Point Forward urged James to make his football dream a reality, perhaps during a possible NBA lockout in 2017, rather than pointlessly flirting with the idea like he has with the Slam Dunk Contest year after year.

It goes without saying that James, who Charles Barkley once called “biggest, stronger, [and] faster” than Michael Jordan, has a place on any NBA-to-NFL crossover squad. But who joins him? With Super Bowl XLVIII just around the corner, The Point Forward scoured the NBA’s ranks to assemble a 22-man football lineup, plus a coaching staff, special teamers and a few key reserves we just couldn’t leave out.

Sullinger, the NBA’s current leader in flagrant fouls, brings a wide frame and a penchant for hard contact.

Sullinger's surge sparks Celtics

BOSTON -- There's a case to be made that Jared Sullinger was Boston's most consistent player over the first half of the 2013-14 season, deterred only briefly at times by some lingering ailments.

And yet there was coach Brad Stevens last week imploring the 21-year-old Sullinger to play beyond his years and grasp the opportunity in front of him. All while Sullinger's father, Satch, a former coach, was scolding his son for his poor body language and attitude as the Celtics navigated a loss-filled month of January.

Sullinger responded with four consecutive double-doubles, each seemingly meatier than the next, culminating Friday night when he posted a career-high 31 points alongside 16 rebounds in Boston's 99-89 triumph over the Sacramento Kings at TD Garden.

Maybe now dad will ease up?

"Nope," said Sullinger. "Not with my father -- no praise that way."

well, ill have to look up damning with faint praise...but if i was damning anyone i meant it to be the GM's who passed on sully, and then made stupid draft picks based on "upside" and all that crap

kinda like this year...wiggins got the athleticism but parker is just a better player overall...i would pick the more complete/less athletic player most of the time...

I agree with this. I would personally take the known commodity and go with 'least downside' over 'most upside' and build incrementally. However, the word "lottery" fits the NBA draft pretty well. It is a lottery ticket. One draft could be your Mega-Millions Jackpot. Whereas any other team sport requires multiple stars and above replacement level guys just to be better than .500, basketball is a game where if you hit two studs that can stay healthy, you're set up for 8-10 years. NBA GMs will always reach.
