C Zed "Finger Guns" Key (transfer to Dayton)

I am very intrigued by Zed. I like the pick up long term but I will say the post situation for next season is a huge question mark. I guess Kyle starts as our post but it would be nice for there to be another regular for Kyle to play off like he does with Kaleb.

will be interesting to see what the staff does if both kaleb and carton depart. i'm assuming that a transfer with immediate availability would be added. do they go with a point guard or a post player, though?

on one hand, the obvious answer seems to be a guard since the duo of walker and washington would be rather thin, while the 4 and 5 would be stocked with 5 players. on the other hand, even without carton, i still think the point guard position will be closer to what the staff expects/wants than the center position. walker and washington may not set the game on fire, but we're still comparing a couple of mostly productive upperclassmen to a sophomore project (diallo) and a true freshman (key). another way of phrasing that last sentence is that i think washington is more than acceptable as a developed combo guard who plays 10ish minutes per game at the point. i've thought since early on in duane's freshman season that his ideal trajectory is one that veers increasingly toward the point guard position.

all that being said, though i think a grad transfer joining key in the front court would give us a bigger boost, i think ho1tmann succumbs to what scares him more: ballhandling depth. if so, i hope ho1tmann at least recognizes the team he has and shifts toward increased tempo, transition, and motion, which are not exactly his style. but i guess there will have to be a change regardless. unless we find a surprise in the post for next year, i'm not seeing a team that flourishes in the half court. key may be our only front court player who creates his own interior offense.

i'd rather see us get past the point of playing the 3 as a 4 because we want to, not so much because we have to. sure, small-ball will be an option, but any two of liddell, young, and key will effectively be a small-ball lineup.

also, we'll see if sueing is the rugged, multi-use defender that andre has been. i'd like to think so, but that would not be giving andre the credit he deserves. the guy is a great defender and a bit of a rarity. no offense to sueing, but odds are he (like pretty much everyone) won't capable or proficient at defending 3s, 4s, 5s, and the occasional 2.

i'm not sure i can come up with a stat line. stuff like that is so fluid, so often misleading. for all we know, key could average 2 points in non-conference and then be a consistent double-digit scorer come march. i'm not saying that's what i think will happen. i'm just pointing out how averages often don't tell the whole story.

what i do think we'll see from key, though, is a player who can be trusted to play sound basketball while banging inside. he'll body up centers. he'll grab rebounds. he'll put back shots. he'll hustle. in time, i think he'll develop into an offensive focal point, but that probably won't be the case for at least another season.

in short, i think key will be a freshman who ho1tmann isn't afraid of playing.

who is al pinkins? as a frontcourt coach, he was only the lead recruiter at tennessee for admiral schofield (ranked 251st). only the leader recruiter for grant williams (191st). only the lead recruiter at texas tech for kyler edwards (159th). only the reason that the red raiders landed tariq owens, who was at tennessee when pinkins was an assistant. the guy knows his stuff and knows how to spot talent that the recruiting services often pass over.
