Michigan guard Andrew Dakich to transfer to Ohio State

The grad-transfer will add depth to Chris Holtmann’s thin backcourt.

Monday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reported that former Michigan guard Andrew Dakich will be transferring to Ohio State as a graduate transfer. The three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree is eligible to play immediately for the Buckeyes, and will add more depth to new head coach Chris Holtmann’s thin backcourt.

The son of former college coach and current ESPN analyst Dan Dakich, Andrew is a 6’2 guard who was put on scholarship for winter semester of his senior year. He red-shirted last season, after playing sparingly during his first three seasons, so he has one year of eligibility for the Buckeyes.

In his first three years in Ann Arbor, Dakich totaled just 22 points on 8 for 24 shooting. However, he was a valuable member of the Wolverines’ scout team.

ANDREW DAKICH GIVES OHIO STATE CRITICAL MINUTES OFF THE BENCH IN WIN OVER IOWA

90010_h.jpg

Don't let the above picture fool you. Andrew Dakich did a lot more for Ohio State in Thursday night's 92-81 win over Iowa than just cheer on his team from the bench.

With starting point guard C.J. Jackson collecting two fouls less than six minutes into the game, Dakich checked in with Ohio State nursing a 14-12 lead, and promptly stole an errant Iowa pass on his first defensive possession.

From there, Dakich dished out five of his six assists in the first half, leading Ohio State to a 17-point advantage just before the end of the first half. His lone points of the game came on a driving layup in the closing minutes of the opening frame, a basket Chris Holtmann said he was surprised went in.

"Andrew really stabilized us and did a terrific job," Holtmann said in his postgame press conference in Iowa City. "He made a shot in the first half that I am still wondering how it went in. He stabilized us with his ball handling."

At some point, Dakich is going to have get comfortable providing some scoring -- so that the Buckeyes don’t have to rely on the starters for all of the scoring output.

“That’s just kind of who (Dakich) is,” Holtmann said Wednesday ahead of a Thursday night game against Maryland at Value City Arena (7 p.m., ESPN2).

Dakich is certainly a pass-first kind of player. Through 17 games, he’s attempted 27 field goals, fewer than two per game. He’s had four games in which he’s played double-digit minutes, and had zero field goal attempts. He’s also third on the team in assists with 2.4 per game.

“But we play smart players, smart coaches and game-planners,” Holtmann said. “He’s a capable shooter. Sooner or later he’s gonna need to step up and take what the defense gives him and be ready to shoot the ball. And he will be.”

Dakich does have excellent shooting numbers this year, even if the sample size is small.

Playing triple the amount of minutes he ever played as a walk-on at Michigan, Dakich is shooting 66.7 percent on field goals (18-of-27) and 70 percent on 3-point field goals (7-of-10). One of those 3s came when he banked one in from long range at the halftime buzzer of a win over then-No. 1 Michigan State last Sunday. Those were Ohio State’s only bench points in a 80-64 win.

this has got to change quickly. Cannot depend upon the starting five to score all of the points in the game. I know the bench is very short but Potter, Young, and the older Wesson along with Andrew have got to step up their game.
