PG Demetrius "Meechie" Johnson, Jr. (transfer back to tOSU)

“This is a great honor for Zed and Meechie,” Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said in the press release announcing these two players' invitation. “I know they are excited about competing with some of the best players in the country at their age for a chance to represent our country. We are excited to follow and support them as they compete for a roster spot on this U19 team.”

“I'm super excited about the step that Meechie can take as a player, as well,” head coach Chris Holtmann said late in April. “A young guy who, I think, bringing him in when we did, I liked that. I felt like that was a good decision at the time and remains a good decision. Hopefully next year will provide some benefits with his experience there.”

Now with the Buckeyes on the practice floor preparing for this season, Johnson is expected to have a larger role. But he recently suffered a setback.

The Ohio State basketball Twitter account tweeted out photos of a practice session, and it showed Johnson in a walking boot. After plenty of replies asking why he was wearing it, the Buckeyes responded.

“Meechie is all good y’all it’s just a precautionary thing after a tweak,” the basketball team tweeted from its account.

There have been plenty of rumblings that Johnson has looked impressive in summer workouts, and Holtmann confirmed that as the case last week.

“I think last year really helped Meechie. Really helped him,” Holtmann said. “He's had a good summer. I'm excited about what this year could be for him. I'm excited about our young guards. I think they're going to be young, they're going to go through growing pains for sure, but I'm excited about our young guards that we have, including Malaki. There'll certainly be times where we play a lot of three-guard lineups this year.”

Johnson, who enrolled in December, played sparingly given his mid-season addition to the roster. He saw action in 17 games, playing 98 minutes while recording 21 points, seven rebounds, three assists and five turnovers.

Next season? Don’t be surprised to look up and see him in the starting five of the Nov. 9 opener against Akron.

I hope Coach is right and Meechie is good enough to fill a bigger role. With his size, length and athleticism, he looks the part of a player at OSU. He just needs to grow the skills to match. I am skeptical but hopefully CH is right. There's a big leap from making the occasional 3 like he did last year to being a major factor on this team.

He and Brown had some shining moments last year. Hope they can do that consistently.
