PG Desi "DJ" Carton (transfer to Marquette)

Holtmann quote
“D.J. is a talented and gifted player and a great addition to our University and basketball program,” Holtmann said in a statement. “He possesses athleticism, tremendous feel for the game and high level competitiveness. We appreciate the edge he plays with. His development and growth as a player has been outstanding in the last couple years and we believe his best days are ahead of him. He really connected well with his future teammates on his visit and I know that was important to him and us. We are excited to welcome D.J. and his family to our Ohio State Basketball family.”
He forgot to say that D.J. can shoot the * out of the ball.

Sitting here watching his HS team. All his points are off the drive and he's a talented finisher with 2 or 3 finishing with a dunk. He's 0 for something shooting from outside though. We'll see if he can heat up in the second half shooting from distance.

There are the highlights. Any more insights rock?

He is a very smooth finisher even in traffic. He seemed to hang up there at the rim forever. He's super quick with his first step...can break his guy down any time he wants. Didn't see him take any mid range jumpers. He only made one of his maybe 8 attempts from 3 point land. Hard to gauge a kids full arsenal in a high school game where he is just head and shoulders the best player on the floor. His team was down by 11 or twelve in the second half and he turned it up a notch and put the team on his back for the comeback win. He finished with 36 points.

Evans Seven: Biggest McDonald's All-American roster snubs

D.J. Carton is one of the top competitors in his graduating class and has impressed with how he's improved his game in recent years. A lefty guard that is one of the more deceptive athletes in the class, Carton could be thrust onto a high-major college roster tomorrow and immediately be relied on to run a half-court offense. The future Ohio State Buckeye is a complete gamer and the type of player that, had he received an invitation, would have been the first to dive on the floor for a loose ball despite the all-star setting.

TBH, if you're a college basketball fan, it is mostly irrelevant if your guys make the McDonald's AA game. Just another hype machine tool. Amir Williams was a McDonald's AA and Frank Kaminsky was not, and were in the same class.

If your guys aren’t playing in the MCDAAG, they just arent going to Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina or Kansas.

D.J. CARTON- BETTENDORF HS, IOWA
Carton is the highest-ranked prospect in Ohio State's class, checking in as the #28 overall player in the 2019 rankings.

So far this season, he has been excellent for Bettendorf, averaging 25.5 points per game, seven rebounds, and six assists for a team that is one of the best in the state.

Carton's best attribute is his overall scoring ability, something that Ohio State has desperately needed this season, especially coming from the point guard spot. He excels with dribble penetration, and also has a nice drive-and-dish ability.

If there is one knock on Carton, it would be his outside shooting. Although his 37% isn't too bad on the surface, he has only shot 92 triples, far less than most of his peers at the position, suggesting that he may not quite be comfortable with his outside shot.

Nevertheless, this is something that Carton can absolutely improve before (and during) his time in Columbus. Carton is a scoring guard that Ohio State desperately needs, and he will be a big part of whether or not the 2019-20 team has success.

Ohio State signee DJ Carton become the first Bettendorf (Iowa) High School player to ever be named Mr. Basketball in Iowa. He was a co-winner of the award that was announced Monday evening with Upper Iowa-bound Jake Tilmer.

Before heading to Ohio State, Carton will take part in the Iverson Classic, teaming up with a fellow future Buckeye, E.J. Liddell.

Carton, Liddell and Alonzo Gaffney make up the top-ranked 2019 recruiting class in the Big Ten. Carton, a four-star point guard, is the No. 28 overall prospect in the country and the fourth-ranked point guard.
