PG Desi "DJ" Carton (transfer to Marquette)

Picked as preseason freshman of the year
Even though Carton might not start immediately due to the presence of Florida State transfer CJ Walker, he earned 15 of the 28 votes for preseason Big Ten Freshman of the Year, per The Athletic and the Columbus Dispatch. The Bettendorf, Iowa, native entered the program as the No. 34 overall prospect and the fourth-ranked point guard in the class of 2019.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: CARTON A CUT ABOVE OTHER FRESHMEN AGAINST CEDARVILLE

IMG_0063-1-530x353.jpg

Ohio State’s four freshmen, comprising the No. 14 recruiting class in the nation, were the steam that powered the Buckeye hype engine ahead of this season.

Each began Wednesday’s exhibition game against Cedarville on the bench, but all had a moment to shine, and none more than freshman guard DJ Carton.

“What I was pleased with is our four freshmen really did try to play the way we’ve coached our group to play, and that’s really important,” Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann said.

The Buckeyes were the fourth-worst scoring team in the Big Ten’s regular season a year ago, and getting out to run in transition was not a pillar of their offense.

Carton showed why that’s likely to change this year, with a stretch in the second half that saw him hit five of Ohio State’s six made shots in a three-minute span –– three of them being fast break dunks.

Catching the Yellow Jacket defense off guard with breakaway speed, Carton jammed home a left-handed dunk that ignited a mostly dormant Columbus crowd, but that was just the warmup.

Two minutes later, Carton stole the ball from the Cedarville point guard to streak to the hoop for an uncontested slam, and in 13 more seconds, he’d thrown down what he called his favorite dunk of the night on an alley-oop from freshman forward E.J. Liddell.

“I remember me and DJ were playing open gym one time, and I didn’t throw him the lob, and he was like, ‘You can throw it to me,’ and I was like, ‘Alright. I got you next time,’” Liddell said. “And that was the perfect situation.”

have read about the dunking and shooting, but the defense and especially passing are what raise my eyelids. just an exhibition, but the guy certainly anticipates passing lanes... on offense and defense. really hope ahrens finds 100% soon. would be a killer duo. washington should be that guy.

dare i say, do i see a little d'angelo in dj's game?

Buckeye Freshman Point Guard DJ Carton — Safe at Any Speed

19-10-30-MB-0485-1170x780.jpg

In DJ Carton’s Buckeye debut this past Wednesday, the Ohio State freshman point guard showcased his entire repertoire.

He pushed the ball as much as he could, immediately calling for it following defensive rebounds. Carton would turn his head up court and get running.

When he was in the half court, he made safe, solid passes where they needed to go, and he also hit shots when they presented themselves.

He looked comfortable in every situation, but it was clear that he excelled when it came to the transition game. He not only pushed it for teammates, but also for himself, ending in several dunks for the 6-foot-1 leaper.

Carton scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, hitting his only 3-point attempt, grabbed two rebounds, two steals, and handed out a team-high five assists in Wednesday night’s exhibition game against Division II Cedarville University.

His ability to make things happen with the push is the major reason why head coach Chris Holtmann has told him to speed it up whenever the situation arrives.

“Every time really. Every time I get the ball I’m going to push it because I know that that’s one of my strengths,” Carton said after the game. “And I know like tonight, sometimes the defense was insane and I know we can get easy buckets like that, so every time I do get the ball in position to push, I’m going to do that. And hopefully I can clean things up in the half court and be able to control the offense a little better.”

Asking a true freshman to keep the offense going full speed as much as possible can be a dangerous proposition, which is why Holtmann and his staff will work to keep Carton somewhat grounded in terms of when, where, and against whom.

“I think it’s apparent, he’s explosive in transition,” Holtmann said after the Cedarville game. “Now, some of that, I think time will tell, right? You have to be aware of the floor was broken at times and maybe the competition level and I think we’ll say that to him. It’s gonna be hard for him to get some of those plays that he got tonight, but I thought his decision making was good.”
