PG Scoonie Penn (B1G POY, All-American, Asst. Coach Memphis Grizzlies)

Scoonie with another assist
Just in time to get them prepared for postseason play, the Buckeyes? point guards have been going against very good competition in practice the past couple of weeks.

Scoonie Penn, who 10 years ago this month led Ohio State to an improbable appearance in the Final Four, is back in town after leaving the team he was playing for in Ukraine, BC Kyiv.

Penn said he left because the club stopped paying its American players. It wasn?t a financial hardship for him, though, he added. ?I got mine up front.?

Penn said he?s trying but hasn?t been able to find tickets to Friday night?s game in Dayton against Siena. He wants to take his daughter.

Multiple Italian media outlets are reporting that 32 year old Scoonie Penn will sign with Virtus Bologna of Italy's top league. This will be Penn's third stint in Italy. He played for Virtus Roma in his 2001-2002 rookie pro season, as well as Scavolini Pesaro in 2004-2005. His most recent team was BC Kyiv (2008-2009) of the Ukrainian League. :osu:

Virtus Inks Penn -Sept 24, 2009

Scoonie Penn will play for Virtus Bologna as least until January 2010, as he agreed with the Italian club on a 4-month contract.

Virtus hired the 32-year old, ex-player of Olympiacos, Cibona and Efes Pilsen, as a replacement for sidelined Andre Collins who is expected to have recovered until January. If of course Penn satisfies with his performance, an extension is not to be ruled out. Penn played for BC Kiev last season.

Where Are They Now: Scoonie Penn
By Gerald Narciso

Scoonie Penn

Before Evan Turner, Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. were Buckeyes, Scoonie Penn was the big man on campus at Ohio State (?98-00). Standing an inch or two short of six-feet, the stocky point guard was like Chauncey Billups the way he could pick apart defenders with his strength and speed. And just like Mr. Big Shot, Penn was cool under pressure and could close out games.

After spending his first two collegiate seasons at Boston College, Scoonie transferred to Ohio State, where he and future NBA All-Star Michael Redd teamed up to form arguably the best backcourt in college basketball at the time. In his two years in Columbus, Penn was a two-time All Big 10 selection and was a third team All-American as a senior. The highlight of his college career was when he helped lead the Buckeyes to the Final Four his junior year in 1999.

Even with Redd on the roster, it was Scoonie that electrified crowds. Always poised, Penn could kill you in every way. Get too close, he?d use that speed to go right around you. Give him an inch and he?d make you pay with his jumper every time. He left OSU as the all-time leader in three-pointers made. The Salem, MA native would also lock down any guard in the country. Who could forget the time in the 1999 Elite Eight game against St. John?s where used his 40-inch vertical to pin Erick Barkley?s layup against the backboard (see video above).

Despite all his accomplishments at OSU, Penn was penalized for his size when it came down to the NBA. Picked late in the second round of the 2000 Draft (57th overall) by the Hawks, Penn never made the team and never played in the NBA. After being released by Atlanta, Scoonie immediately took his game to Italy. Aside from the half-season in 2002 he spent in the D-League with the now-defunct Asheville Altitude, Penn has spent his post college career overseas. He has played in Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey and Ukraine.

Penn has stated he?d like to play in the NBA, but is comfortable and happy in Europe. He also said he?s not interested in playing in the D-League again. Asked by Hoopshype.com in 2003 if he?s mad that he?s not an NBA player, Penn replied:

?No, I won?t feel bitter about that. I?m well contend with my life, with who I am and what I do. Even though not in the NBA, I?m doing what I love to do. Besides, I have a life outside basketball. I love basketball, but it is not the only thing in my life. I?m a well-educated person and I know I can do other things in my life when basketball is not there.?

Now 32 years old, Penn is back playing in Italy for La Fortezza Bologna of the SerieA League. In eight games this season, he is averaging 6.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

Scoonie Penn returns to Olympiacos

4ff.jpg

Olympiacos has reached back into its recent past to add depth and experience to its backcourt by signing guard James "Scoonie" Penn for the remainder of the season. Penn (180, 33) started the current season with Virtus Bologna and returns to Piraeus after three years to replace Von Wafer, who was released three weeks ago. In his previous turn with the Reds, during the 2006-07 season, Penn averaged 11.9 points, 3.1 boards, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 22 Euroleague games. Penn has been a starter with two other Euroleague teams during his decade-long pro career, having spent two seasons between 2003 and 2006 with Cibona Zagreb, winning the Croatian League both times, and the 2007-08 season with Efes Pilsen. His other stops as a pro include Pallacanestro Trieste (2000-01), Virtus Roma (2001-02), Asheville of the NBDL, Crvena Zvezda Belgrade (2002-03), Makedonikos Kozani (2004-05), Victoria Libertas Pesaro (2005) and BC Kiev (2008-09). Prior to turnin pro, Penn played college basketball at Boston College (1995-1997) and at Ohio State University (1998-00). Penn arrived in Greece on Saturday and is expected to be available for the Reds when they visit his former team, Efes Pilsen, in a big Group B game on Thursday.
