Verbals to OSU...father mentions the tradition of the program and the coaching staff as deciding factors...Shannon says he felt OSU was the right place and says will be working with the OSU staff to help recruit other highly rated players to OSU.

Nice. :)

Absolutely love that we are getting that big time PG talent. Especially in GA, which is always loaded with big time players. I remember they had an AAU team based outside of Atlanta I believe that had a frontcourt of Josh Smith, Randolph Morris and Dwight Howard.....needless to say, they were one of the greatest teams of all time. If we can get out foot in the door down there, only good things will come of it.

I posted the below information on Scout's premium board last night. I thought I would post it over here as well. There are some obersvations on Shannon Scott, his teammates, and Trae Golden. My numbers were a little off as Scott had 23, Royal 11, Parker 17, and Golden had 18.

I was able to check out Shannon Scott and Milton High School take on Trae Golden and McEachern High School tonight. Milton took an early lead and then cruised to victory. They were up by as many as 25 and they were winning by about 20 when I left in the middle of the fourth. Below are my thoughts on Shannon Scott, some of his teammates, and Trae Golden. Please keep in mind that this is the first time that I have seen any of these guys play and I am going completely off memory so I do not have exact stats. I live a couple of miles away from Milton, so I hope to be able to catch a few more games during the season.

Shannon Scott - Had a good game probably about 15 or 16 points, 7 or 8 assists, and 3 or 4 steals.
  • I was very impressed with the way Shannon played. Everyone should be ecstatic that he has committed to OSU. I have never seen Aaron Craft play, but I would not be surprised if Shannon Scott is the starting pg when he first steps on campus. I think he is that good.
  • He is very athletic. Not quite on Conley's level, but very close. Probably right behind Conley as the most athletic pg at OSU in the last twenty years. His athletic ability allows him to be a very smooth player. Everything he does looks effortless. Dribbling, passing, shooting, and defense he makes it all look easy.
  • One of his greatest assets is his court vision. He was always able to find the open man whether if it was in the half court set or on a fast break. His ability to find the open man resulted in a countless easy baskets for his team. One area of concern for him though was that he was easily trapped. Which is odd for a player of his skill. McEachern would trap as soon as he crossed half court. He should be able to use his vision to find the open man, or break the double team with his dribble. He was not able to do either. Instead he dribbled directly to the sideline and got trapped. This is definitely something that he will need to work on before the next level.
  • I was surprised with his ability to shoot the ball. Once again his shot is very smooth. A number of times he was able to pull up for jumper just outside the foul line. He would drill it every time. He did hit a 3 as well. At this point though I am not sure if he is consistent enough for teams to be scared of him behind the 3 point line, but his shot is good enough that teams will have to respect it.
  • Shannon is a very good defender as well. Multiple times he was able to anticipate were the other team was passing the ball and jump in the passing lane. He was also good on the ball. He picked a guy clean a couple of times, and it resulted in easy baskets for his team. I would like to see him guard someone a little more talented to get a full idea of his defensive skill.
  • His ball handling skills are above average. He has enough skills to be a good college pg, but he must improve if he wants to be an elite college pg. He turned the ball over a couple of times when he dribbled though traffic. I think at this point it would be considered his biggest weakness, but it is really hard to call it a weakness. It is more an area for improvement for him.
Julian Royal - Had a decent game for Milton. Did not play a lot though because of foul trouble. He probably sat half of the second quarter and most of the third. Probably ended up with 7 or 8 points, a few rebounds, and a couple of blocks.
  • Julian probably has the most potential out of anyone on the floor tonight. Based on tonight I think it could take him a couple of years to have a big impact though.
  • His outside shot is his biggest asset. He consistently drained outside shots during warmups. He was able to translate that to the game and hit a couple of outside shots in his few attempts throughout the game. His outside shot causes match up problems, and could make him dangerous at the next level.
  • Needs to get more aggressive on both sides of the ball. He did not show much of an inside game on offense. Just kind of stood there most of the night. Never really established position, or called for the ball. He could be a very dangerous player if can have more of a presence down low on offense. The same came be said for him on the defensive end. He relies too much on his athletic ability. Every time a shot when up he would just watch the ball. He needs to work on finding a body and boxing out.
Dai-Jon Parker - Had a nice game for Milton. Probably around 10 points, a few rebounds, and a few steals.
  • I think he has the least potential of the three Milton players. He works hard and gives good effort, but right now does not have as much talent as the other two.
  • He guarded Trae Golden most of the night, and did a good job. You could tell that he liked the challenge of guarding the other team's best player. At the same time he was not afraid to get on the floor after loose balls, or bang with some of the bigger bodies below.
  • His biggest weakness is his lack of outside shoot. He was probably 1 for 7 outside the three point line. He does however have a very nice pump fake. If he did not shoot a three he used the pump fake to get his defender in the air and then drive to the basket. He will need to work on his outside shot for his pump fake to be effective at the next level though.
Trae Golden - I think he was the biggest disappointment of the night. He had around 15 points and do not recall him having any impact on defense or on the boards.
  • He is a pretty strong and athletic guy. He was able to use his athletic ability to drive to the basket. He did not finish when he got to the basket though. A couple of times he was able to draw a foul. Other than that he could only score when there was a breakdown in defense and an open lane to the basket.
  • Struggled all night with his outside shot. A consistent outside shot would go a long way for his game.
  • The biggest disappointment about him was his attitude. Part of it was probably because they were getting blown out for most of the game, but I did not see the actions of a team player. He was consistently complaining to the refs and his coaches. Every timeout he would sit 2 or 3 seats away from everyone and have his head down the whole time. He also would not put his hand in the middle and participate in the team chant after timeouts. The ref even made him sit out because his shirt was consitently untucked, and he would not tuck it in.
  • After watching him I am not dissappointed that he decommitted. I am not sure he has the talent to make an impact at OSU, and I do not think he is the type of player that you want on your team either.

Buckeyes nab Milton PG Shannon Scott for 2011
December 4, 2009, by Chip Towers

One of the top basketball prospects in the Class of 2011 plans to leave the state.

Shannon Scott, a 6-foot-2, 170-pound point guard from Alpharetta?s Milton High School, committed to Ohio State at the end of the Thanksgiving week. Scott is rated the No. 12 prospect in America and is a 5-star recruit, according to Rivals.com. Scout.com rates him No. 33 in the nation.

?He?s a five-star guard, make no mistake about it,? said Milton coach David Boyd. ?And he?s getting better all the time. He?s probably our most improved player.?

Scott averaged 11 points and 7 assists on a very balanced, talent-laden team as a sophomore last season.

Scott chose the Buckeyes over Georgia, Georgia Tech and Clemson, according to Boyd. Scott?s father, Charlie Scott, was the first black player at North Carolina and played in the NBA, but Scott eliminated the Tar Heels fairly early.

?They?ve recruited a ton of point guards,? Boyd said. ?They have three committed right now.?

?I think it was my relationship with the coach, and the school,? Scott told BuckeyeGrove.com. ?I just really want to go to Ohio State. I feel like if I didn?t play basketball I would want to be there anyway. I really liked Coach Purnell, but I just liked Ohio State a little bit more.?

Milton is loaded with young talent. Shooting guard Dai-jon Parker (6-3) and 6-7 small forward Julian Royal are both are rated top 30 juniors nationally by Rivals.com and 6-7 sophomore Evan Nolte is expected to be a national prospect.

I wouldn't say Shannon was 3rd or 4th on his team - just from watching this game:

I wouldn't put much stock into the comment that Shannon wasn't the best or second-best player on his team - he sure looks like he's up there to me! Honestly, I am not sure that OSU ought to be extremely interested in the other players on his team - Royal is an interesting prospect, but I'd like to see him play much harder than he showed at times there & do more with his size advantage. As for Parker, I wish him well, but I'm not sure that OSU would be really determined to get him - I think he'd be better off somewhere else.
Having watched most of that game, you can see some of the things Scoon posted about shining through, not just about Shannon but also his teammates, like how he has good ballhandling skills and gets in the passing lanes and gets steals with his quickness. I wouldn't go as far as to say he's #2 to Conley athleticism-wise, because last I remember Scoonie Penn was pretty athletic, but he's definitely got a burst of quickness. I think Shannon's shooting and ability to finish around the basket has a lot of room for improvement to get to the level where Matta's players (the ones that play, that is) are at normally, and of course he won't be able to take possessions off defensively. After watching him play, I'm not sure that he's going to be the main PG at OSU right away - Craft will have an edge having been in the system for a year, and it's going to be hard for Shannon to overcome that lack of experience.

Ask Lee C about Dave's evaluation of talent when it comes to Milton. He will know who you are talking about. Oh, there is a sophomore on that team who is supposed to be the best prospect but don't believe me ask Mr. C.
