Phil Mickelson (official thread)

I'm a big Mickelson fan, started liking him because he was left handed, as I am a lefty also(but he's much better at golf than me.)

Never heard about this gamlbing problem, but I think it could only help him and his image as he gave it all up once he and his wife had a kid, sounds like a good story to me.

How can / why do you dislike him?
He is definitely one of my favorites.
Mostly it has to do with the fact that most people in the world of golf DO like him ... and among other things, he's chubby, goofy looking, has a dumb ass grin on his face whenever he hits some good shots or putts ... the guy just rubs me the wrong way. Until last year it seemed like he was everybody's favorite lovable loser ... I really just don't have much sympathy for lovable losers, and it seemed like he wasn't taking good care of his body (he put on a ton of weight in the last 5-7 years). The resentment just kinda stuck. It mighta faded when he won last year, because you had to feel good for the guy shaking the monkey off his back, but then he acted like a total fool when he won, and I just couldn't take it. I really don't have a good reason, he just seems like the average well-off schmuck golfer.

I believe the Super Bowl bet he made back in 2001 was 20k on the Ravens at 27-1. $20,000 is chump change for a guy who has made 8 figures in endorsement deals the last couple years. Anyhow,I can't see how any story about his gambling will hurt his public image or fan support it's not like he's some self proclaimed moral authority like William Bennett or anything.

Pretty good read about Lefty...

Mickelson manages goodwill ace
Act of kindness to Dobler family undercuts critics' cynicism

The Columbus Dispatch

Phil Mickelson wants to do what? Considering that both men often feel misunderstood, it would not have surprised Conrad Dobler if the offer was some kind of mix-up.
Dobler, a former NFL offensive lineman, had never met Mickelson. Yet here was Mickelson's attorney, Glenn Cohen, calling to say the PGA Tour player wanted to pay for the college education of Dobler's daughter, Holli.
That was almost two years ago. Holli Dobler just completed her sophomore year with a 3.6 grade-point average at Miami University, where tuition/room and board costs $31,103 a year for out-of-state students.

I heard or read some where that he did have a problem with gambling at one point in his life but he had beaten it. Maybe that's what this article will be talking about. Just a thought.

this thread was started two years ago. i'm not sure if the article mentioned ever came out. if it did, it certainly didn't ruin his career.

I guess my recent comments about Phil sleeping like a baby now that Tiger is back (sleep 15 minutes, wake up crying, sleep 15 minutes, wake up crying), have come true sooner than I thought.

He opened in Houston with a 77 (link).

I'm a huge Phil fan mostly because he is human like most of us. There was a great article in Sports Illustrated recently about Phil....

You have to love his river boat gambler mentality...sure it has cost him tournaments, maybe even a US open...but Phil brings the thrill in tournaments that he is in and he can hit the ball a fricking mile.

I love Johnny Miller's comments about how Bones should put a shock collar on Phil...The right handed shot was absolutely phenomenal even if it did catch a tree and the shot he hit out of the trees last and over a bunker on 18 to within 10 ft to win a tournament on Sunday was absolutely killer....not sure Tiger could have pulled that one off.

Where Tiger is absolutely awesome and a more than a bit lucky....Phil is the Journeyman players hero....

It wouldn't surprise me if most golfers do more betting than the average fan knows about. Golf is a game made for betting - how many have you have ever played $1 a hole, $2 sandies, $2 woodies, $2 chip-ins...etc

This is not to suggest that the PGA tour players are betting on themselves or the tournaments. But - it makes sense to assume that alot of them have grown up playing and hustling for small bets. The gambling culture surrounds their sport.

Here's to hoping he gets back on track for the Master's next weekend, because he played like crap this weekend in Texas at the Shell Houston Open

Knowing Phil, he was probably spending more time working on different shots that he wanted to be able to hit at Augusta then really worrying about the Shell Houston Open....This just puts him at Augusta earlier....

"The harder you work, the luckier you get."
How true, there is no arguing that you make your own luck...although not many golfers have fans that come out and move loose impediments for them that take multiple people to lift....

I recall reading somewhere that some guys make more money during the practice rounds then they do playing the tournaments....Fuzzy Zoeller was supposedly one who cleaned up on Monday and Tuesdays back in the day....
