Pirates tidbits (2013)

The Braves came into Pittsburgh on Thursday with the best record in baseball and the Pirates take 3 of 4.

7 - 2 against the Reds, Cardinals and Braves during the homestand.

Its only April but I'll take it after a 1 - 5 start.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the results of this home stand. Beating the Reds, Cardinals and Braves is like Christmas in April. :pirate1:

Bucs take 3 straight from Milwaukee. It wasn't long ago when they didn't win 3 all season against those fuckers. :pirate2:

Brewers. :shake:

I really like the makeup of this Pirates team though. They've almost traded places with the Brewers. The Brewers are now following the old Pirates MO of picking up washed-up veterans. It's amazing how the Pirates have gone from a 100-loss team to an up-and-coming team.

I think most Pirate fans would tell you wait and see before giving them too much credit. They've spit many a bit down the stretch over the past 20 years.

Things to watch at the quarter pole:
-Their pen has logged the most IP of any team in the NL so far this year and is out performing its FIP by almost a full run.
-Their starters walk A LOT of people and don't strike out that many, they are also outperforming but not by a huge margin.
-Starling Marte has a .392 BABIP. I doubt he can keep his current level of production up.

The Pirates have 109 games left. They are 33-20. To reach 82 wins they need to go 49-60 the rest of the way. That's still the goal until they achieve it. If or when that happens I'll reassess it.

Meanwhile, I've been enjoying the good start. :)

You know you're on a roll when...your opponent gets 4 hits in one inning and they do not score. Bucs beat the Tigers 1-0 in extra innings...again. That's their 9th shut out in 54 games.

Everyone knows about the the last 2 decades, but at no point did they have the 2nd best record in baseball and 34 wins before the end of May. Pretty remarkable stuff, so far.

Bucs rally from 3 runs down in the 9th to win in extras and complete a sweep of the Angels. It's the Pirates first 3 game sweep in California since 2009 and their first ever such sweep on the road in inter league play.

46-30, heading to Seattle. Considering they've now had to use a dozen starting pitchers, mostly due to injuries, that record is impressive to this point.

Still, the season isn't even halfway over yet. :pirate1:
