Pittsburgh Penguins (Official Thread)

Yeah and as Jake said, you guys needed help in goal or on the back end more than scoring punch.

Unless the plan is to win in the playoffs by out-scoring people, which hasn't been the case even in the "new" NHL, I'm not sure the Pens really helped themselves in the playoffs so to speak. the regular season will be interesting to watch though, that's for sure.

What the heck makes you think they need help in goal? They don't.

If you knew anything about the Penguins, you'd know that guys like Armstrong and EC are easily replaced by a number of guys. EC will only be missed during shootouts and I guess that won't matter in the playoffs. Hossa's a better defensive forward than Army anyway. Gill will help in the back end, too.

Crosby-Hossa and Malone-Malkin-Sykora are a much better playoff lines than just Crosby-Armstrong at #1

what you mean is this well get them through the east, maybe. it will get them beat if they get to the finals. with the rough and tumble west you better plan on playing d and getting hit/beat and mugged...

the western playoffs should be good boring hockey, the east will be run and gun open hockey.

i predict the western conf winner to hoist the cup

Playoff hockey is never run and gun open hockey. Playoff hockey is completely different from regular season hockey. Always has been. That is why it always takes young players one playoff series to get adjusted to it. In the playoffs, what you need are three consistent lines and a hot goaltender.

Penguins are also 8-1-1 this year against the West.

Penguins Vs. West
Anaheim - W - 5-4 (Anaheim is different now, though)
@ Minnesota - W - 4-2
@ Colorado - L - 2-3
Dallas - W - 4-1
Phoenix - W - 3-1
@ Edmonton - W - 4-2
@ Calgary - W - 3-2 SO
@ Vancouver - W - 2-1 SO
LA Kings - W - 4-2
San Jose - L - 1-2 SO (It should be noted, though, that the Pens played this game on February 24th. They played against Ottawa on February 23rd. San Jose had not played a game since February 21st).

Do not confuse Western Conference dominance in the NBA for Western Conference dominance in the NHL. 3 of the last 4 Stanley Cup winners have come from the Eastern Conference.

pitt is
4-1-0 vs the nw
4-0-1 vs the pac
havent played a game vs the central div

pitt is 9-11-2 in the atl div.
10-5-2 vs ne
9-4-2 vs se

that makes them one of 3 teams with winning records vs the west conference, 3 teams in the west having losing records vs the east (one of them being the sharks)

that being said 1 game is not equal to a 7 game series.

facts aside i feel that the west is better and deeper vs the east. the east plays a more up and down run and gun wide open style than the west. the rough and tumble grind style will be tougher to beat.

the front runners id say at this point are ducks, sharks, stars and devils.

as mentioned before i dont know how i feel about conks in net. hes looked good and youve got maf bobbing between pitt and swb. i just dont see him and his mental lapses paying dividends in critical moments.

First of all, last night was pretty painful. Hossa's injury was scary. Luckily it is only for a week. And, the team needed to be punched in the face. Stuff had been rolling along too well.

jimotis, It is true that the West is deeper than the East. I mean, let us face facts: The Southeast Division is terrible. If you cannot get the top seed in the East, you want the 6th seed.

I totally agree that the East is more open during the Regular Season. Playoff hockey is playoff hockey. The keys in playoff hockey are always offensive depth and the hottest goaltender. If you have 3 lines rolling and a solid goaltender, then you shall do well in playoffs. If you aren't showing depth offensively, but have the hottest goaltender, you will lose to the first team that has a hot goaltender and offensive depth (See: Dallas vs. Buffalo Stanley Cup Finals a few years ago. Buffalo had Hasek, Peca, and Miroslav Satan. Dallas had an army of offensive threats).

Let us look at last years Stanley Cup playoffs. In the Eastern Conference playoffs, Ottawa's role players were actually productive. Trust me, I'd know. I watched the Pittsburgh - Ottawa series, and some parts of the other playoff series. All the hype was over their first line, but they also got scoring from: Meszaros, Kelly, Preissing, Neil, Comrie, McAmmond, Volchenkov, Vermette. I was literally screaming at the TV, cause they had so much more depth.

Let us look at the goals scored for Ottawa in the finals in the games they lost: Fisher, Redden, Alfredsson (3), Heatley. Now, in the game they won 5-3, they had 5 different players score goals. They showed some depth in the game they won.

Now, look at Anaheim. They got production out of Getzlaf, Selanne, Perry, McDonald, Palhsson, Moen, Niedermayer, and then the defensemen. They had more depth on offense. They had a relentless offensive assault on 3 lines. And Giguere had a .922 save percentage.

Offensive depth and hottest goaltender. Always important. That is why the Penguins made the trade for Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis.

I mean, in reality, the Penguins upgraded two offensive positions. It is now possible for them to roll 3 solid lines. With Crosby, Malkin, Hossa, Staal, Malone, Sykora, Dupuis, and Kennedy, that is 8 offensive players that can score if on the right line combination. Factor in Sargent Gonchar, Ryan Whitney, and Kris Letang on defense, and there is all of a sudden almost certainly going to be 4 offensive threats on the ice at a time. Not only that, those forwards (Especially Malone, Hossa, Staal despite his rough 2nd year, and Crosby) are solid in their own zone. The Penguins went from two lines and a power play, to three lines and two power play units. That is critical.

Finally, it should be noted that the goaltending situation only requires a hot goaltender in the playoffs. If Fleury turns it on, and becomes the main guy, then so be it. If Conklin keeps up his pace (Aside from last night), and stays the main guy, then so be it. The reality is that you just need a goaltender doing something hot to win in the playoffs. See: Ken Wregget, Ron Tugnutt, Johan Hedberg.

My expectation for the Pens this year isn't the Finals. That is unfair. I know they are aiming for it, but I wouldn't be angry if they didn't make it. I'd be fine with making it to the Eastern Conference Finals. Even winning only one playoff series wouldn't kill me. I'd pretty much die if they didn't make it past the 1st round.

the hossa thing will be longer than a week i was told, he will be reevaluated in a week, look for him to be out about 2 weeks or so.

personally id rather have good defensive deep, and that is the way the west seems to be. im not being negative, its like football, you have teams with all offense, all defense, strength in defense, strength in offense, and balanced. the east tends to be more offensively minded and more flow up and down the ice. you dont see as much trapping and you have better open ice players. what style will win? who knows, though i tend to think defense wins when the game gets mucked up a tad in the playoffs.

goaltending, youre right about getting hot, though you have to be "hot" for a long time. the ability to be hot over long periods of time is what i consider being good.

we shall see it should be interesting. im excited as anyone for the playoffs....

Crosby returns tonight. WOOHOO! Without Crosby Pens went 11-6-4, not bad all things considering.
Such a highly anticipated return. Too bad Staal went to the locker room with an injury, and that Crosby missed an empty net (Wasn't really his fault. Tough shot).

Pens now sitting atop the Atlantic with a 6 point lead, can clinch with 2 more wins or a NJ loss.

Who the hell slapped Ruutu around and said he was a scorer? 6 points in 6 games including 3 points last night. Even Laraque got into the act with 2 points including a goal.

Oh and some Crosby guy returned...again. Still with all the scoring, it will all depend on how Fluery and our D does in the playoffs.

GO PENS!

If they can get 3 points out of a possible 8, then NJ has to win all of their remaining 5 games, since the Pens have all the tiebreakers in their favor.

MAF is playing great in the pipes. Since he came back from his injury he has an 8-1 record, has given up 14 goals in 10 games and has a save % of 94.8.

The remaining 4 games are against the Flyers and Rangers. They both play well against the Pens.

4 games left for the Devils, 93 points. 3 games left for the Penguins, 99 points. Penguins have tiebreaker. If the Penguins get 2 more points, they are guaranteed to win the division. That would be excellent.

Pens locked up the Atlantic Division last night. Great game against Philly, now that was playoff hockey. If those 2 teams meet in the playoffs, that will be a fun time. MAF continues to play well, hopefully that continues into the playoffs.

It was a great night to be a Pens fan. I finally found the local gathering spot for Pens fans here and look forward to making some new friends over playoff hockey.

IMO the biggest change over the last three years has come from the way the team approaches games - Mario is and will always be my favorite Penguin, but he was sort of a porcelain doll. In contrasts it seems no one on this team (or recent teams) is above dropping the gloves and getting physical and that's made all the difference in the world, especially as the play in the crease has gotten tighter. This will benefit us well as we move into playoff land where the game slows down and the physicality increases.

When you pair this with the increased player development and smarter free agent spending, you've got a good shot!!

Great, now they can beat Philly Sunday and send the knuckle-draggers home for the season. Although, the Pens-Flyers would be a great first round matchup.

Regardless of which team you play, first round matchups are always tight.
