Pittsburgh Pirates (2016 - Jake's thread of occasional negativity)

Let's see, so far this off season the Bucs have given Pedro Alvarez his walking papers with no immediate plan on how to replace him. Josh Bell probably needs at least a half season at AAA before he's ready, if not an entire season. Similarly, Neil Walker was peddled to the Mets for pedestrian lefty Jonathan Niese even though Alen Hanson is also a year away. It seems like one more year of arbitration with Walker and Alvarez would've been prudent but I guess we needed a fifth starter. Speaking of which, Charlie Morton was shipped to Philadelphia for some 34th round draft pick named Whitehead. Giving Chuck an extension was as foolish as I suspected at the time, but giving him away for next to nothing doesn't seem wise either.

Anyway, while the Cubs and Cardinals are making moves (and spending money) to improve themselves the Pirates are being the Pirates. Billionaire Bob Nutting wants to keep the profits coming and is betting on Bucs fans being content with finishing above .500, more free t-shirts, and having post game concerts summer Saturday nights. He'll probably win that bet even if the team slips below .500 in 2016 because PNC Park is so gosh darn pretty.

Who needs to ever actually win anything again? Once those young players get old enough to be paid let 'em walk or ship them out for scraps. Bring up the next group of kids, cross your fingers, and repeat the cycle.

This new Pirates hot dog is like the worst 'Chopped' recipe ever

It's a foot-long, all beef hot dog topped Cracker Jack (weird, but OK, it's a baseball thing), macaroni and cheese (you sure about this?), salted caramel sauce (say what now?) and fried jalapeños (at this point, why not?), all on naan bread.

I can deal with mac & cheese and jalapeños, but I'll pass on the caramel.

I'm predicting 3rd in the division, but if the Cubs are as advertised and the Cardinals are the Cardinals that could be 88 wins. The Bucs will need contributions from the farm, especially in the rotation (Taillon and/or Glasnow), to overtake them.

    Play ball! :pirate:

Jon Niese's first outing was pretty much what I expected - Jeff Locke 2.0. The Bucs rotation to start this season is the worst it's been in a few years. Nicasio's Spring better not be a fluke, and the kids (Taillon/Glasnow) need to hit the bigs this summer (and produce). Otherwise, finishing over .500 may be the only realistic goal.

That said, they did rally to win Niese's start and go to 2-0 with another win over the Cardinals. :pirate:

Pirates sign OF Gregory Polanco to a 5 year $35 million contract. If this kid keeps progressing as expected it'll look like a steal. Early indications are the Bucs outfield is as good as anyone's in MLB.

Break out the brooms! Three game sweep of the Cardinals to start the season. :gagnam:
