Pittsburgh Steelers (official thread)

Wonder what we would know about this play if there were all the camera angles and replay that we have today. I’m not aware that there is a definitive shot that I have seen actually showing the catch.

Re: The ball bounced off the hands of Raiders safety Jack Tatum and/or Fuqua and, as it fell (but before it touched the ground), Steelers fullback Franco Harris scooped it up and ran for a game-winning touchdown. The play has been a source of unresolved controversy and speculation ever since, as many people have contended that the ball touched only Fuqua or the ground before Harris caught it, either of which would have resulted in an incomplete pass by the rules at the time.

I've always wondered if Jack Tatum did touch it first (i.e. making it a legal reception); and not to mention just looking at it frame by frame in HD.

Haley is out. Though the offense doesn't appear to be your issue. I doubt much will change in Pittsburgh until Tomlin is finally shown the door.

Bingo. Haley's the fall guy here. Would be interested in hearing what some Steelers' fans on BP think, but from my vantage point, although Haley's play calling wasn't perfect (no OC's is, by the way), his offenses were pretty damn effective. It's hard to believe Big Ben would be happy with this move:

Roethlisberger, who averaged 297.6 passing yards per game since 2014, emphasized continuity with coaches and players during his weekly radio show, citing a productive meeting with Haley this week.

What a cop out by Steelers FO

Haley's offense just put up what, 42 points? Sure there were some questionable calls on 4th down but the loss was on a bad defense and Tomlins brain dead decision to try the on side kick with 2+ minutes and all 3 time outs.

If Marcus Williams didn't pull a Marcus Williams later in the day, Tomlin's onside kick call would have been the most galactically stupid thing of the day.

I've wanted Todd Haley gone for years.

His offenses are very inconsistent week to week.

He overthinks things, that wasn't the first time we've thrown deep downfield on 4th and a foot. He was also quarterback sneak averse at Kansas City.

He runs Bell into the ground to the point that he's worn down or injured for the playoffs.

He's always extremely cognicent of statistical records. There was a Baltimore game a few years back where Ben was one short of breaking some record for TDs in a 2 game stretch, so we were chucking it downfield with 2 mins left in a blowout. Another time Brown had a 5 catch per game streak in jeopardy, so we were targeting him exclusively in the final minutes despite being way up or way down, don't remember which.

His redzone offense sucks. Again, he overthinks it and gets cute with things like receiver screens when the defense is compressed.

On paper, I think this is the most talented offensive roster in the league by a wide margin. Brown and Bell are probably the best WR/RB combo ever, certainly since Irvin/Emmit.The line usually gives Ben hours of time to hold onto the ball. Heath Miller was a pro bowl caliber tight end before retiring, Jesse James looks just as good and McDonald looks like a future matchup nightmare. The wide receiver depth behind Brown is ridiculous, JuJu, Martavis, Eli. And oh yea, hall of fame quarterback. Any offensive coordinator in the league would kill for that many toys.

Regarding the 42 points. Two TDs off 4th down hail marys doesnt happen very often, and the final TD came with a second on the clock? A smarter staff would have kicked the FG with 40 something seconds and tried another onsides.

He's regularly spotted in Pittsburgh bars getting into shouting matches and fights.

You guys are right about Tomlin though. I won't write another thesis, just highlights.

Horrible clock management and situational awareness.

Teams play up or down to the competition.

They take bad teams for granted (except the browns I guess?). 19-22 as of the Bears game against sub .500 teams since 2011. 15 losses to sub .250 teams. There's all your missed playoff spots and bad seeding right there, not losing to the Patriots.

The off field drama, his teams are not disciplined. They are always looking ahead, like tweeting about a Patriots rematch the night before Jacksonville.

Report: Big Ben ‘massively frustrated’ with Tomlin
...

“Ben, I’ve got it sourced, isn’t happy,” Cowherd said. “He saw this as a rare opportunity — he’s so frustrated with a lack of discipline — to pile on. … By the way, limited partners are now pushing for a new coach and also concerned about the team’s lack of discipline. Ben is telling those close to him, ‘We’re not a group of grownups, the Patriots are.'”

From the outside, it has always appeared to me that Tomlin has no clue of the work it takes to get to the top of the NFL. I'll never believe he puts in the time and work, strategizes and, quite simply, devotes his entire life to football like a Belichick or Gruden does. And it shows--he often looks lost in critical situations, makes choices that have massively low probabilities of success, his teams are wildly undisciplined on and off the field, etc.

I've never been a huge fan of Haley and am quickly turning on Tomlin. Undisciplined players, skipping meetings/practices/walkthroughs, tweeting stupid shit, looking past opponents, it all leads to bad performances on the field. Every damn year they lose at least one game they should win. Either the offense or the defense doesn't show up and they suck at least once per season.

They've got enough playoff experience to know that every games' intensity gets cranked up in the playoffs, but yet they were still looking right past Jacksonville to the rematch with New England - even after getting embarrassed by Jacksonville in the regular season. That's not only on Tomlin, but the entire team. Pathetic showing and everyone on that team should be humiliated.
