Pittsburgh Steelers (official thread)

Ben Roethlisberger signs with Pittsburgh Steelers for 2021 NFL season

Ben Roethlisberger is officially back with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2021 NFL season, the team announced Thursday.

The Steelers did not disclose the terms, but a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that Roethlisberger willingly reduced his pay to $14 million from $19 million in this final year of his contract and spread the cash payment through 2022. The move lowers the team's salary-cap hit by more than $15 million.

Pittsburgh Steelers give coach Mike Tomlin 3-year contract extension through 2024

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed coach Mike Tomlin to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. The extension will run through the 2024 season.

The 49-year-old is heading into his 15th season as the Steelers' head coach since taking over prior to the 2007 season.

Tomlin led the Steelers to a Super Bowl XLIII victory in his second season with the team and appeared in Super Bowl XLV.
.
.
.
Tomlin has compiled a 153-86-1 overall mark (including the playoffs) and has the highest winning percentage (.640) of any head coach in Steelers history, ahead of Hall of Famers Bill Cowher (1992-2006) and Chuck Noll (1969-91).

Just sayin': Since 1969 the Steelers have had only 3 head coaches. Many NFL teams change their head coach about as often as Jim Harbaugh changes his underware*.....

* Which was documented by his wife in a book:

As quoted in the above book on page 127.

I'm giving Pittsburgh a B+ in the draft so far. I didn't want to be too biased and give them an A. But all of their picks can slide in as starters or provide great 2 deep depth from day 1.

Haskins bears watching in training camp and the preseason. A first-round pick who was unceremoniously dumped last year in Washington, Haskins has undeniable talent but failed to put it together in his first NFL stop. Pittsburgh is a place where he could have a year to develop behind Roethlisberger and then compete for a starting job again in 2022, but it’s also a place where if he blows his second chance, he may not get a third chance.

The Pittsburgh Steelers can add another important name to their near constantly growing injury report. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is dealing with an injury to his left pectoral muscle, according to NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala.

"We'd better be ready to be adjustable." Tomlin told reporters, according to Kinkhabwala.

It is not clear when Roethlisberger would have injured himself, as he did not exit Pittsburgh’s Sunday game against the Las Vegas Raiders. He did take two sacks for a total loss of three yards.

If Roethlisberger is unable to play, then Pittsburgh could lean on former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins. Drafted 15th overall by the Washington Football Team in the 2019 NFL Draft, Haskins signed with the Steelers in January and competed against Mason Rudolph throughout the preseason for the backup quarterback spot.

Detroit Lions-Pittsburgh Steelers ending comes as surprise to some players: 'Didn't even know you could tie in the NFL'

"I didn't even know you could tie in the NFL," Harris said. "In my mind, I was sitting on the bench saying, 'I've got another quarter to go.' But someone came to me and said, 'That's it.' I've never had a tie in my life before."

Harris wasn't the only one who wasn't expecting the abrupt, unsatisfying ending.

"It's nuts," Lions second-year running back Godwin Igwebuike said. "I'm back there like, 'Yo, how many overtimes can we do?' And they're like 'three' ... I hear 'two, one' and we were like, 'Yo, whatever's going on, we're about to just put our all into it.'"
