PK Blake Haubeil (3rd Team All B1G)

Hope he is as good as he is ranked...we might need him to step in and play from day 1.
I haven't seen live action but the film is sick. Considering our kicker this year hadnt even ever played football before, I think he's got a good shot. Chrisman and he will duel with Chrisman doing the punting. I figure we're in pretty good hands as long as they get past the freshman inexperience

I have read where there is a possibility of him grey shirting. I know that means he can still play in the Fall until he gets his scholarship in January. I guess my question is what is the difference between a grey shirt and being a preferred walk-on. I would think that he could be the latter for the first part of next season and then they could put him on scholarship in January also.

I also know that we are getting a transfer punter from PSU and wondered if that was going to play in these plans. Do not mean to steal Blake's thread but did not know any other good place to post this.

Haubeil is a FG kicker so I don't know about a transfer from a punter factoring in. Chrisman is the punter of the future, I believe.

Edit: Nevermind, it could affect scholarship numbers so I have no idea.

Edit #2: It appears that the PSU transfer is walking on.

A walkon is someone who was not deemed good enough for a scholarship offer, usually leading to an official visit and/or signed LOI. They sometimes earn them during their time at the school but they are not guaranteed anything.

A preferred walkon is a regular walk-on except he has a guaranteed spot on the roster, he does not have to try out like the regular walk-ons.

A greyshirt is a scholarship athlete that pays his way the first semester and does not receive a full ride scholarship until the next semester, thereby making him count as a player in the next class. So if Blake remains a greyshirt, he would essentially be the same as an early enrollee in the 2018 class.

I would not make any assumptions about Blake's scholarship. The lone scholarship kicker has not beaten out the walkons for the past two seasons, and there are 1-2 other names that may be departing soon that would allow both kickers to be on scholarship. If you're going to make any assumptions, assume that Blake will be part of the competition this fall.

I understand the differences that you mentioned between a preferred walk-on and a greyshirt but my question was more about training table and the other benefits that a scholarship athlete receives and a preferred walk-on does not. I guess my question was does having a greyshirt get you more benefits because I know a preferred walk-on does not get any of the benefits of a scholarship athlete.

My understanding of a greyshirt is that the student-athlete actually delays enrollment the school. A student-athlete has five years of eligibility during which he/she can compete in four seasons (unless you are granted a sixth year hardship waiver). The five year clock begins on your first day of classes. For instance if you enroll in school and begin classes, then in your third year (academic junior) you join the football team (scholarship or walk-on) you only have three years left.

So the purpose of a grey shirt is to delay the start of the five year clock. The term greyshirt is not actually a term of art in NCAA rules lingo. It's a slang term. All it really means is that you are not enrolling. So, my understanding is you don't have any benefits at all because you're not even a student. I guess you could theoretically enroll and begin classes and just not join the team or go on scholarship until the second semester, but that would defeat the purpose of delaying the start of the five year clock. That starts on your first day of classes whether you are on the team or not. Either way if you greyshirt you get no benefits.
