PK Blake Haubeil (3rd Team All B1G)

Disagree. I like the directional kicking if it is done correctly. Many times in the past I have seen the opposing team starting at the 15-20 yard line which is pretty chancy. Just giving them the ball on the 25 yard line just because we cannot perform a directional kick is really unacceptable and I certainly would not put a couple starters, which has been suggested in other places, on the kickoff team. That is just asking for trouble regarding injuries to guys who are on the first team.

My problem is that we haven't done it correctly all year and I am concerned the problem won't be fixed as we head into November. Now if we really don't have anyone who can kick it out of the endzone, then we just have to improve.

I don't believe this at all, seen first hand both kickers being able to. https://twitter.com/AndrewMLind/status/925028977588219904 …

Yeah and that's where I am with the KO's.. the insanity isn't that we can't kick the ball where we want on the angled kick it's that we clearly don't have the kick off personnel to execute it.

I suppose teams may have figured out how to beat it though and I hope they look into it. However right now the insanity is if they continue with the same unit, with the same approach and then expecting different results.

Since it's probably not smart to change the approach (hard to execute something entirely new) you'd have to think they address it with personnel.

We have used the same strategy for KO since Urban has been here. It's normally been great. This year guys haven't made plays. When I rewatch the TD, PSU blocked well and we didn't get off of them or make them miss. It was execution not strategy.

If you go back several years Urban was one of the first to line up from one hash to sideline and kick to the corner the way we do. Now a ton of teams try to replicate what Urban started especially in high school. It is solid strategically.

This years guys just aren't consistently making plays.

It's hard to go 85 for scores, much harder than 75. I would love to see stats on scoring drives of 85 plus.

There's no way that these kids can't.. I fail to believe that they can't hit the end zone when we've seen them Pooch kick to the 3 more or less.

No idea why we insist we can't but seems to be a lot of people saying "woah wait, we certainly can"

UFM said we don't have someone that can do that and whether we do is apparently up for debate with that deleted tweet. We don't look nearly as fast as we normally have on kick offs either..

Presser today -- responding to a remark that Haubeil had a couple touchbacks earlier in the year, Urban crossed his arms and shook his head saying, "I dunno ... and then he drops one on the 28 yard line in the middle of the field."

So, while he might be exaggerating with the declarative, 'we're the only team in America that can't do it,' it's pretty obvious he's not satisfied with the consistency.

Also, I know this is stating the obvious but hang time is as important (if not even more) as distance. Getting the ball into the end zone on its own isn't in itself a cure. I'd hesitate to say it's as simple as telling the kickers to kick it further when none of us knows what the hang time numbers are in practices. If you think we "don't look nearly as fast as we normally have," then that's probably a pretty big clue...

This is a bit odd with Coach saying they cannot do it, when literally everyone else saying they can. Granted, consistency may be a concern, but at this Point, what have you got to lose? The way we are doing things now isn’t working particularly well.

It's not just guys not making tackles, it's guys not doing their jobs. There are three glaring issues with this year's KO coverage team that continually gets them in trouble:

1. If they are going to continue doing directional kicking, guys have to stay in their lanes. Watch the tape. On Barkley's return and the other 60+ yarder later in the game, guys are all bunched up.

2. and with that same thought, if you kick it to one side, they can't continually let the ball carrier cross their face and lose the edge. You have to establish the right edge and force the runner back into traffic, make the runner slow down, hesitate, change direction, something. On both TD returns this year they have let the ball carrier take it from one side of the field to the other, breaking contain, where there isn't anyone to make a tackle and where the returner is at full speed, making him much tougher to tackle and then it's just a foot race.

3. Which brings me to #3. We have a lot of speed on the KO team. They are getting down there fast. That isn't the issue. Guys aren't getting off of blocks. And guys who aren't in the play are taking poor retreat angles eliminating them from being able to make a TD saving tackle down the field. Going to lose that foot race almost all the time if they are at full speed and aren't having to slow down to cut, juke, ect.... before they even get past the first wave of tacklers. I think Urban is going to re-evaluate his personnel and find a good mix of speed guys and tough guys.

This can't continue. Looks great when an offense starts at the 15, but risky when teams repetitively break contain and spring the big one.

Onside it every time then.

I wonder how many you would recover if you worked on kicking a low screamer at the up men every time?

Not the front line, like a true onside kick, but those wedge guys back around the 30. By the time they scramble around to get on the ball there isn't going to be a return.

Either that or kick that sumbitch straight up in the air and make those same guys fair catch it.
