Buffalo's Justin Moss, the MAC Player of the Year, accused of theft

Moss-Potential-Theft.jpg

Buffalo's Justin Moss may not get a chance to defend his MAC Player of the Year title this year, pending the result of a hearing at the university following his involvement in an on-campus theft.

The Buffalo News has the details.

The status of University at Buffalo star basketball player Justin Moss is uncertain in the wake of his involvement in an on-campus theft.

Moss and fellow UB basketball players Raheem Johnson and Mory Diane were caught in June stealing money – a total of $650 – from the dorm room of two other students on the Amherst Campus, according to a University Police report obtained by The News.

The basketball players returned the money and the two victims in the case agreed to not press charges. However, the case was turned over to the Student-Wide Judiciary, which handles student misconduct.

...

The Student-Wide Judiciary conducts hearings on cases of student misconduct. It is believed a hearing on the case had been scheduled at some time in the past two weeks.

Possible punishment by that body for the players? At worst, a student-athlete could be expelled. A source told The News it's possible Moss (and the others) could be deemed ineligible for the first semester of the season, during which time a dozen or so games are played.

It's worth noting that this is not a criminal issue, but rather a student conduct issue.

Maybe best to NOT get arrested when you're overseas on a team trip, but that's just my opinion.

Illini junior forward Darius Paul suspended after arrest in France
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebas...-darius-paul-suspended-after-arrest-in-france
Illinois men's basketball coach John Groce announced Saturday that junior Darius Paul has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules during the Illini's trip to France.

According to WCIA-3, the suspension is the result of Paul being arrested Friday in Deauvilleand charged with vandalism, public intoxication and resisting arrest after authorities received reports of him damaging vehicles.

"We have specific standards of behavior for every member of our team and when those expectations are not met there are consequences," Groce said. "Darius is returning home immediately, and we will evaluate his status with the team following our return."

Paul did not play in any games on the trip.

He's recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Paul had just rejoined the Illinois basketball team after being suspended all of last season for failing two drug tests. The 6-foot-8 forward began his college career at Western Michigan, where he played one season and averaged 10.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Has Darius Paul Run Out of Chances at Illinois?

Paul is coming off a one-year suspension after an arrest for underage drinking and resisting arrest. Add in two failed drug tests at Illinois and it will be very interesting to see how Groce handles this situation.

“We have specific standards of behavior for every member of our team, and when those expectations are not met, there are consequences,” Groce said in a statement released Saturday. “Darius is returning home immediately, and we will evaluate his status with the team following our return to Champaign.”

Paul wasn’t playing on the trip. He was recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum. If anyone should understand that his behavior was being watched, it should be Paul. He was suspended for the entire 2014-15 season after he failed two drug tests for marijuana use. That was in addition to underage drinking and resisting an officer.

After transferring from Western Michigan, where he won 2013 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year honors, Paul had to sit out 2013-14 under NCAA rules. He then opted to play last season at Lamar State College-Port Arthur in Texas and he averaged 17.1 point and 9.1 rebounds.

Illinois dismisses forward Darius Paul

Darius Paul has been dismissed from the Illinois men's basketball team following an arrest during the Illini's recent trip to France, the school announced late Friday.

"Although his playing days here are over, we are committed to helping him move forward," said Illinois coach John Groce.

Paul was arrested last week in France for vandalizing vehicles and resisting arrest while he was reportedly intoxicated. The school subsequently made him leave the trip early.

Sources: LiAngelo Ball, 2 other UCLA players arrested in China

Three UCLA men's basketball players -- including LiAngelo Ball, the younger brother of Los Angeles Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball -- were arrested in China just days before Friday's season-opening game against Georgia Tech in Shanghai, sources told ESPN's Jeff Goodman.

One source told ESPN the group of players -- which also included freshmen Cody Riley and Jalen Hill -- was arrested on shoplifting charges.

The players are being questioned about stealing from a Louis Vuitton store that is located next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before moving on to Shanghai on Wednesday.

One source told ESPN that nearly 20 police officers came into the Hyatt Hangzhou at approximately 8 a.m. local time Tuesday and spoke to multiple players from both Georgia Tech and UCLA. The players, according to the source, were kept in a room for hours and not allowed to speak to any of the coaches.

"They weren't messing around," the source told ESPN. "The kids were scared."

The Georgia Tech players were allowed to leave the room hours later, and the UCLA players were seen getting into a police vehicle around 1 p.m. local time, according to the source.

Three UCLA players could remain in China "a week or two," source says

The three UCLA men's basketball players arrested on shoplifting charges Tuesday will remain in Hangzhou and will not be on the team's flight back to Los Angeles after the Bruins' season-opening 63-60 win over Georgia Tech in Shanghai on Saturday, multiple sources told ESPN.

The three players -- freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Cody Riley and Jalen Hill -- were questioned about allegedly stealing sunglasses from a Louis Vuitton store next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, where the Bruins had been staying before leaving for Shanghai on Tuesday. They were released on bail early Wednesday morning and have been staying at a lakeside hotel in Hangzhou since then while the team has been in Shanghai preparing for Saturday's game.

A source with firsthand knowledge of the investigation said the players could be in Hangzhou for "a week or two." The source also noted that there is surveillance footage of the players shoplifting from three stores inside of a high-end shopping center next to the team's hotel in Hangzhou, which houses Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent and Salvatore Ferragamo stores.

On Wednesday morning, LaVar had been expected to address the media from his hotel suite in Shanghai, but he said he was advised by legal counsel not to speak "due to the legal nature of the matter."

As he was leaving the hotel later Wednesday, LaVar said: "I'm going to wait until I get some more intel on what's going on, and then I can tell you what's up."

Asked if he was worried about LiAngelo, LaVar said, "He'll be fine. He'll be fine. Everybody making it a big deal. It ain't that big of a deal."

Trust me on this.....being arrested in a country like China with undisputable evidence that you are guilty; it is a BIG DEAL.

Michigan State great Mateen Cleaves acquitted on all charges in rape trial

A jury acquitted former Michigan State basketball star Mateen Cleaves on Tuesday on all charges in his rape case in Genesee County Circuit Court.

Cleaves is the Flint native who led Michigan State to the 2000 NCAA championship. He faced up to 15 years in prison if he had been convicted of unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to commit sexual penetration, and criminal sexual conduct.

A jury of nine women and three men began deliberating his case at 1:45 p.m. and reached a verdict in about 2½ hours.

cases like cleaves need to go to the jury with 3 possible outcomes. defendant was guilty of the charge, accuser was lying and gets punished, or accuser was honest, but jury feels no crime occurred. In this case, it seems the woman was either lying or he committed rape. The jury should have to decide one or the other.

That doesn't jive with the beyond a reasonable doubt standard for criminal convictions at all.

"or accuser was honest, but jury feels no crime occurred."

My proposal is if the jury believes the accuser lied. The argument against would be more one of "due process" than a standard for guilt. I believe if you are going to accuse someone of criminal activity, you need to be completely certain in your statements and actions and giving the jury the ability to convict false statements without a prosecutor bringing separate charges would help in the legal process. Again, this doesn't mean the jury has to find someone guilty, but it does give them the option if its clear one was lying.

I think the issue has mainly become that jurors in many cases interpret "beyond reasonable doubt" to "beyond all doubt". In the current environment, unless there is a video of the assault (as I understand it, there actually was video in this case of him preventing her from leaving), you are almost never going to get a conviction. I would tell any woman to forgo any legal trial and go straight to the civil court. I don't know whether Cleaves was actually guilty or not (I don't know the evidence), but this is essentially a case of who do you believe and if the evidence isn't clearly with the prosecution, then there shouldn't be any charges brought.

the possibility of a jury punishing a woman who has been raped is a surefire way of guaranteeing that no woman who has been raped will ever come forward.

it's almost as if lots of people don't understand that one of the resulting problems of rape is that there is often not much evidence left behind. rape does not necessarily involve witnesses, bruises, torn clothes, or vaginal tears. and when it does, the expected defense is that the evidence is merely circumstantial and/or the product of consensual sex. furthermore, the victim's understandable and common response to rape is to immediately shower, dispatch of clothing, and close off oneself to the outside world. all of this complicates charges, prosecution, and certainly a guilty verdict, which tends to make the victim look even more like a false accuser.

i agree that there are times when the accuser is proven beyond a reasonable doubt to have fabricated charges and therefore there should be a measured response; however, to state that the jury should be forced with the decision over punishing an accuser who may be truthful is utterly repugnant. the unintended consequences would be horrible, which is a massive understatement.
