Nets' Jefferson charged with assaulting man in January

MINNEAPOLIS -- New Jersey Nets forward Richard Jefferson was charged with assault Wednesday for grabbing another man by the throat in a Minneapolis club earlier this year. But the player disputed the account of what happened.

Jefferson was in town with the team on Jan. 27 when, according to a charge filed, he went to a club in the Graves Hotel where the victim was having a private birthday party in a roped-off section.

The documents say Jefferson entered the area and got angry when he was asked to leave. He is accused of grabbing the victim, shoving him to a bench and choking him with both hands.

Former NBA player and one-time University of Alabama basketball standout Jim Farmer is facing a human trafficking charge in Middle Tennessee.
Farmer, 55, of Franklin, Tenn. was among 16 men arrested on charges of seeking sex from minors, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported this week. A statement from the agency says the men were arrested during a two-day sting operation that began on Oct. 24.
According to an arrest affidavit, Farmer responded to an adult escort advertisement on Oct. 25 in regards to meeting a juvenile for sex.
During the communication, a female undercover officer identified herself as a 16-year-old girl. Farmer, the affidavit continues, agreed to pay $170 to have sex with the girl.
Farmer arrived at a predetermined location made between the two and was subsequently arrested on one count of trafficking of sexual servitude, authorities said.
He was booked into the Rutherford County jail that same day and released Tuesday on $75,000 bond.

Los Angeles Police say New Orleans Pelicans center Jaxson Hayes resisted arrest, had to be subdued by Taser

Los Angeles police say New Orleans Pelicans center Jaxson Hayes resisted arrest and had to be subdued by Taser while officers were investigating a domestic violence call on Wednesday morning.

In a news release Thursday, police say Hayes was arrested under "California Penal Code section 69, Resisting Arrest," which carries a stiffer penalty and includes using violence to try to prevent officers from doing their duties. A conviction on that charge could carry a maximum of three years in jail.

The Los Angeles Police Department says Hayes met officers, who were responding to the call, in the front yard of the residence. When officers informed Hayes they needed to speak with someone inside the residence, they say, he tried to prevent them from entering.

Footage from police body cameras reportedly shows Hayes trying to enter the residence despite warnings from officers. As he continued to push forward, officers called for backup and tried to place Hayes' hands behind his back.

Hayes broke free and pushed an officer into a wall.

The LAPD says that officers then used physical force to get Hayes to the ground and that, when he continued to struggle, officers used "two deployments of the Taser, as well as bodyweight and physical force." Police say the altercation lasted two-and-a-half minutes before Hayes was handcuffed.
