I'm not sure if he has been offered a longer leash or not...but I do have an explanation to why I think Chaney gets by with more than a white coach could under the exact same circumstances.

Now more than ever, the perception of racism supercedes reality. Just look at all the fuss at Notre Dame over the Willingham firing. If it was a white coach, it would be just another guy that couldn't win at Notre Dame feeling the boosters wrath. I actually heard several people suggesting that he should have had more of a chance BECAUSE he was black.

Not to turn this into an affirmative action discussion, but the idea of giving someone a greater opportunity because of the color of their skin is racism no matter which race gets the benefits. Maybe there aren't enough black coaches getting an equal shot these days, but I think a lot of organizations and universities aren't willing to deal with the headaches, media circus and Jesse Jackson speeches.

Maybe it's because I'm young and I don't know better, maybe it's because I have a black family members and friends...but I just don't think this should be such a big issue. If I were black, I would be offended that people wanted to give me an advantage or more chances because they didn't think I could do it without their help.
Where is one of those "great post" awards? I gotta have one around here somewhere?

I don't think Willingham's firing at ND has to do w/ race. That said, if Charlie Weiss has the same record after 3 years as Willingham, and keeps his job-the powers that be at ND will have some serious explaining to do-and rightfully so. I think Willingham should have been given 1 more year, but then again, Urban Meyer would not have been available after this year either........

I'm not sure this is only a 'black coach' thing... granted it has been treated VERY poorly by every individual involved, especially Chaney (multiple brain farts)... but Chaney did a LOT of good/great things in his sane years... He has helped a lot of kids find their way out of horrible situations... I think this is why the matter has been cloudy for the administration much moreso than the color of his skin...

OH, and if Woody were black he would not have been fired... cuz he would never have been hired in the first place... think of the era...

There's a very big difference between Woody and Chaney's situations:

First off, Woody was getting old, the game was passing him by, and the team was starting to decline. He probably should've retired a year or two earlier anyway. The change needed to be made, and that was as good an excuse as any.

Temple basketball (under Chaney) is as good as its ever gonna get. They'll never be a Duke or a UConn, they're a slightly better than middle-of-the road basketball team, and that's what they are now. Have they had better days? Sure. But there's no on-court reason to fire Chaney.

Which brings me to reason # 2:

As big as Woody was, Ohio State football was always bigger. OSU is/was/has been a perennial Top 10 Program with or without Woody. The firing was less risky for the Admin b/c the Program would survive and thrive without him. John Chaney IS Temple basketball: they're not even a blip on the radar without him, and they'd proceed directly into the tank once he's fired. And that's why he won't get canned, not b/c of his skin color.

Nebraska can lose Tom Osborne and keep on rolling. scUM can lose Bo and keep rolling. OSU can lose Woody and keep rolling. A mid-level Program (in whatever sport) can't dismiss a HOF coach and keep rolling. Where has Georgetown been w/o John Thompson? Where has Arkansas been w/o Nolan Richardson? Only the legit powers can afford to unload a coach like that, not the other schools.
