Possible 6th BCS game?

<snip>, when is the last time number five had a legit gripe at the title? <snip>
easy! 1983... Miami was ranked #5 when they beat Nebraska in the Orange, #2 Texas lost to Georgia (10-9), #3 Auburn barely beat Mich (9-7), and #4 Illinois got destroyed by UCLA (45-7) in the Rose...

thus, the #5 team not only had a legitimate gripe about who was the Champ, they WERE the Champ...

In both 1977 and 1983, the #5 team beat the #1 team and moved all the way to the #1 spot. In '77, it was ND over Texas, when #3 Arkansas (coached by Lou Holtz) nailed #2 Oklahoma later in the Orange. Apparently Lou decided if he couldn't beat ND in the polls, he should join them.

My point is that the #5 team should never play the #1 team in the Bowls, they don't deserve a shot at the title. If #1 would have played #2, #3, or even #4 those years, #5 had no shot at going all the way to number 1. And any sort of playoff with more than 4 teams would detract from the regular season. College football has the best regular season of any sport. Let's not turn college football into college basketball, the NBA, or the NHL, where the regular seasons have little meaning.

I know everybody hates the BCS, but it sets up a #1 vs #2 matchup as often as possible. I also really like the rotating championship games, they give us a 75% chance (may soon be 80%) of not having to play USC in the Rose Bowl when we have a shot at #1. It also moves Miami away from the Orange Bowl (which is played in Miami, although not in the Orange Bowl) most of the time when they have a shot at number 1.

When we played for NC's after the '74, '75, and '79 seasons, wouldn't the results have been better if we weren't always playing an LA team in the Rose Bowl? I sure think so (I was a minority Buckeye fan at the '75 Rose Bowl).

I can get the warm fuzzy feeling of tradition watching the parade on TV in the morning. When we're playing for the NC, I'll take a neutral field as often as possible! Without the BCS, we wouldn't have played Miami after the '02 season.

Go Bucks!
