Possibly moving to Austin, Texas

3074326

Assistant to the Head Coach
I might have an opportunity to move to Austin for work. Never been there, but I'm planning on using some vacation time in the next month or so to check it out. Any recommendations on stuff to do? Would you live there?

I've heard fantastic things about the city. And being in a music-related job, I think it could be a really good place to be.

Thanks in advance!

I was stationed an hour north at Fort Hood for 3 years, and love Austin, spent probably 100 nights there... would live there in a heartbeat!

GO TO BONEDADDY'S !!!! It's like a Hooters on Steroids with amazing BBQ, beer, and all around good decor/environment

Left Columbus in 06 for a job here, still here. Outstanding city not like the rest of Texas (I'm not kidding you drive outside the city 20 minutes... thats Texas, not Austin). Traffic is horrible along the main roads. Avoid I-35 like its the plague at all hours of the day.

must do's while in Austin:
go to Zilker park admire the scenery (depends on if your married or not the definition of scenery)
6th street (college age)
4th St/Warehouse District (employed people)
Go see anyone at one of the many local music venues.
Go see Lake Travis or atleast drive out there.

I'll generate more when my coworker who has lived here all her life gets in.

It's been awhile, but to my way of thinking, quite a lot like C'bus. Capital of vibrant state. Home to THE major university in state. Both universities are very much academic leaders, with great reputations. Rabid sports fans, of everything Longhorn. I prefer Ohio stadium, as Longhorn stadium gives me nosebleeds and vertigo when looking down.

Area around Austin is incredible. The lakes and hills are phenominal if you are boat people. Spent some time in the 'hill country' at some of the golf resorts, and are very elegant and upscale. The economy in Austin has alot of high tech, and Apple/Dell/? have outsourced assembly there, so there is a highly paid, educated populace beyond that of a major university. If your current job doesn't work out, there are other areas/jobs to jump to. A 'yankee' diploma (north of the Red River) is not as looked upon as a UT diploma (yankee is sometimes called 'know-it-alls'), and a Texan is never wrong.....very cliquish group.

Nightlife has probably changed, but 6th street always has something going on, and you can bar-hop from place to place until you find some music/women that you feel comfortable with. Many different varieties.

Downside is the 'red-necky' cowboy-up type of atmosphere present. I know that sounds judgemental, but I 'did' five years in Texas, and didn't much care for it. If you do, well, Austin is more of a cowboy boots with a suit type of place. Good food, from 'Que to high French, with many options in between. Good transportation hub, with Southwest flying to many cities directly, and a short jump to Dallas (DFW), which will get you anywhere in the planet. In boom times (oil prices up which they are now), there is alot of money flowin, and house prices sky-rocket, so you might be priced out of the market in the nicest areas. Education system was pretty stable (not in the 'know' anymore), so check out the API of the school in the area (if you don't have kids now, maybe later, or even if not, it's important for resale value).......

Just off the top of my head, but the area is one I could live in if I had to live in Texas........I'm still California Dreamin'.......

Sorry, gonna have to disagree with you on the bolded... Austin is more flip flops than Cowboy boots and more jeans than suit on a given day. There is the redneckish element but its very minor. Also how could you argue with cowboy boots with a skirt :wink2:

About the sports fans, While the Longhorn contingent is very large here, they are not as vocal or outspoken as say Buckeye fans in Columbus. There is less care given about sports other than football, baseball ranking a close 2nd. Most of the rowdy fans end up coming in from outside the city on game day/week

Housing prices aren't really sky rocketing they never really dropped much during the recession, however if your will to not have an Austin address there is great value to be found just outside the city (thats what I did). Austin ISD is hit or miss on schools and you're right in that you usually need a large roll of cash to get into areas with good schools.
