Program in turmoil (maybe not)

A walk on on the football team is probably more appreciated in Columbus.. Than a freshman basketball player. That maybe hard for some who were "stars" in HS to accept. The environment UFM has created leaves little room for the basketball team to grow.

Been on these boards for a long time and I'm actually surprised with the acceptance of medicority for our basketball program. Those blue blood programs had to start somewhere. Duke was good(ish) before Coach K - but they took off under Coach K. They certainly weren't a much better program than Ohio State (in fact a case can be made that OSU was more accomplished).

I don't see why we can't be a top 10 team every year. We have the resources and the best damn school in the land.

Even the blue bloods aren't in the top ten every year. "Not top ten" is an unrealistic and unfair definition of mediocrity.

Is this real life?

Everything everyone thinks tOSU basketball should be is because Thad Motherfucking Matta already gave it to your ungrateful asses.

Holy [Mark May].
The ol' Paterno problem minus the child rape... if we are in fact in a period of decline with Matta, the short term evidence indicating we might be, as discussed by more basketball knowledgable people than me.

For those who want change, I'll throw these names out there: Eldon Miller, Jim O'Brien, Gary Williams and Randy Ayers. Gary Williams had a losing record in the Big Ten. Matta has coached the Buckeyes to more B1G titles than those four did combined. Matta has not been mediocre.

No, Giddens is reportedly interested in Kentucky. Whether or not Kentucky is interested in Giddens is another matter.
Giddens had offers from Arizona, Kansas, Indiana, Florida, just to name a few coming out of High school. Again, not sure where this "Matta needs to recruit better". Giddens could have easily chosen Arizona or Kansas, which are not exactly chop liver.

1) People need to stop using Giddens to evaluate the other 2 departures. Mickey and AJ were not the same caliber of recruit as Daniel. JaQuon was ranked higher, as was Austin, though he bailed immediately. Did scout rank the class high enough that they should have been decent, at least in a year or two? Yes. Was it a high level class? No. Should it have been downgraded further with a few drops in rankings? Yes.

2) Offers are introductions these days unless you're foolish like Beilein.

3) In the 2015 class, Kansas signed 5* C Diallo and high 4* PF Carlton Bragg (from Cleveland). I'm not sure I buy that he could easily have chosen Kansas.

4) In the 2015 class, Arizona signed three 5* (SG, SF, PG) and a 4* C (Comanche). In the 2016 class, they signed three more 5* at SG, PG & PF. In the previous class, they signed C Ristic (4*), 5* SF Stanley Johnson, 4* PF Craig Victor (also high 4* PG Jackson Cartwright). I'm not sure I buy that he had free reign to choose Kansas.

5) Kentucky signed three 5* in 2015, five in 2016 (plus a high 4*) and will undoubtedly land more in 2017 (considering they signed 19 of them from 2010-2014). I'm not sure I believe that Kentucky is willing to give him a full ride (especially with a year off penalty)

I wasn't advocating changing coaches; I'll leave that to people who pay more attention to basketball than I do.

I was just pointing out the dilemma of past success versus current decline (if that is the case) as the Paterno case demonstrates in the extreme.

On the other hand, Penn State football hasn't gotten any better since the days of coach-from-the-booth zombie Paterno, so maybe a fading/faded former great coach is better than tossing the dice on a new one.

It kinda boils down to how much faith you have in the AD to make a good hire, and I personally don't have much faith in Gene Smith.
