Reeking with awesomeness
It's time for me to brag.

My 11 year old just received his Black Belt in Kempo Katate.
I am really jealous. I was 17 before I got my first Black Belt.
He started when he was 5.

I always hated those bumper stickers that say "my kid is an honor student"
I always liked the ones that said "my kid can beat up your honor student"

Well, my kid got all A's too.

Maybe I can invent my own bumper sticker.

" My kid is an honor student, and can kick your kids butt too"

Ok, I am done bragging. I just had to tell someone else how proud I am today.

Congrats! Kempo is a great style of martial art -- very brutal! Manfred, my fiance, has his 4th degree in Kempo.

Thanks,
I'm only a 3Dan.
I never really thought of Kempo as brutal. It is much more open handed, vertical fighting.

Hawg, I ask myself that question all the time.
He's good looking too. That really has me puzzled.

Scarlet, he already kicks my ass. We practice 3-4 times a week together. If I ever start going too hard, mama gets all over me. If she even hears him yell, ouch, I get yelled at by the mama. He often does it just to get me in trouble. The little shit...

It's a good thing she never goes to class with us. If she did, she would freak over how physical it can get on sparring nights.

you should be proud, excellent work.

Myself, I am proud to say I have become a 10th degree master of the "Wax on...Wax off" technique.....

I have made some of my own personall modifications to the technique in that I only use the "wacks off" part of the technique. But I am a master of that particular specialty.

Congrats!

On a side note, my 4 1/2 year old wants to take karate and my research says they need to be 5 before they can start. It sounds like it has been great for your son. Do you have any recommendations as to the type of martial arts or anything else related?

I feel it mostly depends on your Sensei. Don't get one of these yelling all the time, and very abusive, strict types. You want one that is good for the kids, and makes it fun , but as they grow, he toughens up with them.

Go to a few classes, and watch with your kid. See what he thinks of the Sensei, and how things run.
Don't only go to one class to make your decision. In our Dojo, their are different things reviewed on different nights. You may go on a night where it looks great, or a night where it looks bad.

I have seen where kids will quit because they feel their Sensei is mean. .
You want them to enjoy the learning experience. Martial Arts can be very fun, and very emotional. It is great excercise, a great confidence builder, and really teaches discipline.

Kempo is very good, because it focuses on the empty hands, and feet. Punches, and kicks. There are a few take downs/sweeps, but not like Judo.
I would suggest going to a few different dojos, and deciding what style, and Sensei is best for your child.

Also, I am not sure about age limits, I think it is more of a decision you, and the Sensei make of is he/she ready.

My almost 5 year old wanted to try, but she wasn't ready. My wife wants her in dance anyways.:(
Yet there are some that aren't five yet, that are pretty good.
It is an individual thing.

congrats

also... even though I wasn't the one that asked... thanks for the info. One of my sons has Cerebral Palsy and we're thinking that when he's old enough (he's only three now) that martial arts would be great for him. He has stiffness in his right hand, arm and leg and this would be a great workout for him.
