BCS Play Offs
I've been picking up a good deal of chatter about a BCS playoff system. I'm not opposed to this automatically, but I think all Big Ten fans should be concerned with the geography of any playoff plan.
Most of the plans I've heard or read about propose to use the current bowl games to determine a final two. If that's the case then I'm against it.
The 2003 Fiesta Bowl is an abaration. Thank God Miami only has three or four fans who will travel out of Florida to support the 'canes. In almost all bowl games teams from the Big 10 must play someone on their home field or a field in the same geographic area.
I have yet to see a Rose Bowl game where the Big 10 team had anything near parity in fan support. We're always the "visiting team" regardless of the jersey colors. I'm sure I'm less than objective here, but it seems to me that OSU, Michigan and Purdue have all been "jobbed" in Pasedena. Refs are not immune to crowd noise.
If the playoffs are to be fair then there should games played in northern sites as well as warm weather sites. I'd settle for a final game alternating between the Super Dome and the RCA Dome, but I want to see Florida State play tOSU in the Big House in December or USC tangle with Wisconsin in the Shoe in order to get to the finals. That's parity.
Tell me that warm weather NFL teams don't dread late season trips to Green Bay or Chicago. (I even think Minnesota made a huge mistake putting the Vikes in the Metro Dome)
So let's have playoffs, but let's make sure they do more than pander to the economic wishes of the LA/Miami/Dallas Chambers of Commerce, let's make sure the playing field is even.
