Ridiculous. I used to think of my dad as Indiana Jones because I was constantly being hit by what looked like a god damn bullwhip while running around the house (father was a large man, and always had a big thick leather belt that seemed to take no less than a millisecond to get off his waist). It never once crossed my mind to turn him in - usually because I knew I did something wrong to deserve the punishment.

edit: my god, I just noticed the GRANDMOTHER turned her in...didn't see that coming.

By telling them you love them, hugging them, and telling them they can't do that again. If you're really radical, you might actually take away something or tell them they have to sit/stand somewhere for a few minutes, and cave after about 30 seconds of crying/yelling.

    EDIT: That was for Mili

And some wonder why these younger generations have zero respect for authority and no real sense of accountability these days. :shake:

My father whipped me with his belt when I did something that was egregiously wrong, and I learned not to do that particular thing ever again. I turned out OK (for the most part ) and don't have any angst because of it.

The article didn't mention which grandmother, but I'm going to guess that it was the grandmother on the father's side, and that that same grandmother now has custody of the grandchildren.

Nope. Just someone that always assumes an ulterior motive when something like this happens.

I spanked my oldest boy one time. (He's now 41, was 8 at the time). Serious safety violation - he and a friend were up on the railroad tracks behind our house without adult supervision (had been warned on numerous occasions). Never needed to spank him again. Never needed to spank his younger brother ever. Both got the message.

Spanking (physical violence) is an extreme form of punishment - a form of abuse when used frequently; tears down the parent-child relationship. When used selectively, carefully, and without parental anger, can sometimes be useful.

Hard to make absolute, black and white, calls here.
