QB CJ Stroud (All B1G, 2022 B1G QB of the Year, All-American, NFL OROY, Houston Texans)

JACK MILLER AND C.J. STROUD, QB
Stroud and Miller take the last two spots on our list not because it’s likely that either of them will be at Ohio State for six years, but because it eliminates the question of whether either of them should redshirt this season, allowing the Buckeyes to play both of them as much as they want in a winter/spring season without having to worry about compromising their long-term options.

That’s true for every freshman, increasing all of their potential to play in as many games as possible once they finally get to play their first season, but it could be especially beneficial for the quarterbacks – and their team – to know they’re getting a free year of eligibility no matter how many games they play in.

If Fields opts out of the winter season, it’s possible Stroud or Miller could be the Buckeyes’ new starting quarterback for that season. Regardless, Ohio State will certainly want to get both of them reps when they can. And as long as the Buckeyes play this winter, they’ll be able to do that without worrying about either of them losing a year – which could give whoever doesn’t ultimately win the starting job more incentive to stick around with another year to potentially start later, or at worst, give him another year of eligibility to take with him if one of them ultimately decides to transfer for a chance to start elsewhere.

6. QB CJ Stroud

The battle to be Justin Fields' backup is just that - a battle that will go for the next few weeks. I’ve heard good things about CJ Stroud and think he is going to prevail and earn game reps which will eventually be very important in regards to next season’s Ohio State team.

While Ohio State didn’t end up getting to play its backups nearly as much as it expected when it took a 35-3 lead into halftime, true freshman C.J. Stroud was in fact the first quarterback off the bench on Saturday, after fellow freshman Jack Miller got in the game for the final drive of the season opener against Nebraska. Stroud’s Ohio State debut consisted of just one snap, however, on which he handed the ball off to fellow freshman Miyan Williams – who also made his Buckeye debut on that play – who gained five yards on the final play to run out the clock.

Nice run CJ. Pretty cool to see Jack run down to congratulate him. We've got a could guys that are ready to fight for a job.

Yeah, it’s gotta be tough for those two as teammates and competitors but that’s a strong sign of leadership from Jack. One really positive NCAA development has been their lax policy when it comes to transfers. It really allows elite QBs to go in and compete for positions at big time schools but still have viable options if they don’t win the starting job. The difficulty is that QB depth becomes a concern for those schools but whatever is best for the players, I support that.
