Corey Dennis (QB Coach & Pass Game Coordinator Tulsa)

QUARTERBACKS COACH COREY DENNIS
WHO’LL BE THE BACKUP TO JUSTIN FIELDS?
It must be nice for Dennis to walk into his first-ever full-time assistant position with a Heisman Trophy finalist returning as the starter. The mission: Don’t screw Fields up. OK, it’s more complicated than that...sort of.

But elsewhere at quarterback? Now that’s where the intrigue picks up.

Those who tune into Ohio State games know as well as anyone how much backup quarterbacks can affect games – or seasons if they’re needed as long-term fixes. Nobody hopes the Buckeyes will have to rely on somebody other than Fields taking snaps behind center. But it can’t be ruled out. So in order to prepare for a worst-case scenario, Dennis – along with Day – has to figure out who’ll be the primary backup to open the season.

Gunnar Hoak, a redshirt senior, is entering his second season at Ohio State after transferring from Kentucky. The veteran certainly has the edge in experience over CJ Stroud and Jack Miller, but the pair of freshmen is the future at the position beyond 2020. Are either of them ready to be the backup right away after an unconventional offseason? It’s up to Dennis to find out.

SKULL SESSION: COREY DENNIS AND KEENAN BAILEY ARE 30 UNDER 30, DENZEL WARD SHINED ON THURSDAY NIGHT, AND THE PAC-12 IS ON THE VERGE OF A RETURN

CRADLE OF COACHES. Ohio State's always been a launching bad for future coaching stars, so much so that there are far, far too many legends to even begin to name names.

And that doesn't seem to be changing, with four coaches with Buckeye ties cracking 247Sports' 30Under30 list.

Corey Dennis, Ohio State, Quarterbacks Coach (27): In need of a replacement for the departing Mike Yurcich, head coach Ryan Day tabbed Dennis as the team’s next QB coach. Dennis had spent the previous five seasons in Columbus as an off-field assistant, largely working as Day’s right-hand man and tutoring quarterbacks. “He’s like my personal QB coach when Coach Day is not around,” Dwayne Haskins said in 2018. Now, Dennis takes over a QB room that includes Justin Fields and 2020 five-star CJ Stroud. Dennis is on a quick coordinator track.

This guy deserves a lot of love for working with Stroud, and him improving in the 2nd half. In the middle of a hectic, tight game, Day doesn't have time to focus solely on the QB as he also has an entire team to coach. And that's where Dennis and the position coaches as a whole have to step up. And it seems that Dennis calmed Stroud down and had him focus, which led to 2nd half success. Kudos should go to Dennis for coaching up his young QB and not torpedoing his confidence by even looking at the backups. :dance2:

With all of the attention on the current coaching staff changes, I felt like Corey Dennis deserved some love for the short time he's coached at Ohio State

I know it's a small sample size, but Corey has developed a couple of the best pure arm talent that Ohio State has put out in program history (Fields & Stroud), and was the primary recruiter on the highest rated recruit Ohio State has ever landed in the modern era. Corey doesn't recruit quantity, but his quality has been fantastic

Again, small sample size, but as @ORD_Buckeye might say, "the dude fucks"

I mean he’s only 66% so far on keeping recruits and 50% on keeping croots he’s listed as the primary …

just nitpicking :biggrin2:
