QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

I thought about him too. And don’t get me wrong. I love me some Blood Thirsty Card-dale Jones, but I think that Germain was more well rounded... as I do DH. Cardale had a big arm, for sure... and was clearly a pro style QB... but I’m not sure that he had the kind of touch on the ball that I think we’ll see from Haskins.

But your point is well taken. I can see a strong argument for your position.

Agree with all of the above. But I think in terms of just raw potential as an NFL QB, Cardale had more than Joe. Dwayne looks like a happy medium: bigger and stronger than Joe, better accuracy and touch than Cardale. I think Joe Burrow actually had a lot in common with Joe Germaine which is why it was so disappointing to see him leave.

As I said, I think you have a strong case for your argument.

And your point about the Joes, is also a point of agreement.

That said, I think we also clearly agree that the future is bright. Should be another fun year in S&G.

Braxton Miller on Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins: ‘One day he’s going to win the Heisman’
By Austin Ward
Published on July 10, 2018

HILLIARD — Whether he was catching passes or throwing, Braxton Miller might have more insight into what it takes to succeed at the most important position at Ohio State than just about anybody. And on top of that, his personal experiences with Dwayne Haskins have already produced one bold prediction.

The two haven’t worked out together yet this summer. But as a sweat-soaked Miller wrapped up his instructional camp for kids on Sunday in suburban Columbus, he made it no secret just how much potential he’s already seen from the next in line to lead the Buckeyes.

“I told him that one day he’s going to win the Heisman,” Miller said with a smile. “I’ve known Dwayne for two years now. Man, he’s dope, he’s nice.

“I haven’t thrown with him since last year. But ever since he came in, whenever I needed somebody to throw with when J.T. [Barrett] wasn’t there or available, he was always available and always willing to work. He reminds me of myself in a way. He just wanted to go get it.”

Dwayne Haskins has been quietly doing everything right to lead Ohio State in 2018

It might not be in the headlines, but Haskins is earning the respect and trust of his teammates.

“It’s the job of a leader — earn trust. With all due respect to other sports, this is the most unique position in all of sport. You have to understand the entire defense, have to understand all other 10 players. He has to make decisions in split seconds. And, by the way, he’s got people like [Nick] Bosa trying to tear his throat out. It’s very unique position, but he’s done very well.”

Even before J.T. Barrett’s last snap as a Buckeye, fans, analysts and media members have speculated about who would take over in his stead. As far back as last spring, the Joe Burrow vs. Dwayne Haskins storylines flooded spring camp headlines, and up until Burrow broke his hand, the No. 2 behind Barrett was never official.

Burrow’s injury would jettison Haskins to second-place on the depth chart, where he ended up claiming 171 total snaps during the 2017 season. Sure, a majority of those were in garbage time, but when Barrett went down against Michigan, Haskins had an opportunity eerily similar to Cardale Jones many moons ago.

When Haskins took over against TTUN, he completed 6-of-7 pass attempts for 94 yards, in addition to his 24 yards on three runs. It isn’t the most impressive stat-line, but the backup QB didn’t need to win the game on his own, he had running backs and receivers who could carry the ball into the end zone and a defense that few team’s could challenge.

At the end of the day, he led Ohio State to a comeback win against their biggest rival, securing yet another pair of Gold Pants for the team and keeping Urban Meyer’s undefeated streak against them in tact.

“He’s a good player,” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said at Big Ten Media Days, according to The Blade. “Stature in the pocket was different. He made some good throws, and he was athletic getting out of the pocket. He looks like a fine quarterback. He played very well. That’s not an easy thing to do, coming off the bench and playing good — and he did.”

QUARTERBACK GURU TALKS HASKINS. Remember when Dwayne Haskins taking over for J.T. Barrett was the biggest storyline of the offseason?

Well, despite everything going down in Columbus right now, the Buckeyes still do have to replace a four-year starter at quarterback, and the guy tabbed to do it is still pretty damn talented.

Alex Gleitman of Bucknuts.com spoke to quarterback guru Quincy Avery, who worked with Haskins during the offseason, to discuss what the new Buckeye quarterback will bring to Ohio State.

From Bucknuts.com:

"He’s so smart and he’s so polished," Avery said of Haskins. "He has the ability to do a lot of things throwing the ball. He throws like a NFL veteran right now. He’s that accurate. He comes out and he works like a pro at this point already. He has a plan of things he wants to work on and he moves forward from there. I think that’s impressive for someone who is just over 21 years old, to be able to work in that manner. He has the ability to make every throw on the field, but he can also move. I think people take that for granted, his ability to move in the pocket. I think he’s going to have a special year."

...

"I think some of the things that Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day do [with Dwayne] are going to open up the offense a bit," he shared. "Ryan Day has a NFL pedigree and Kevin Wilson comes from a system where he wants to throw the ball around a lot. So, the more he (Haskins) throws the ball, I just think the more impressed people are going to be [with the offense]. They have some great backs at Ohio State, but the ability to really throw, and keep Dwayne out of the quarterback run game so much, it's going to be beneficial to him and the program.

"He can do anything that you want a quarterback to do in 2018. He's athletic enough to throw the ball and run it. He's going to have a big season."

Folks, I understand there's a lot going on right now, but regardless of how the Urban Meyer shakes out, the Buckeyes are going to play football in less than a month, so we may as well get excited about it.
