QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

But can he go as high as Hornibrook...? Saw this and still can't believe he's the top rated guy in the conference and that far ahead of Haskins. I know he gets dinged for often throwing short passes, but man.

I have to say that I'm seriously surprised. Old noodle-arm above Haskins? Along with Captain Moxie?

Whatevs.

Why? Interesting ownership history though, it's now owned by a Chinese company.:

Eckrich was founded as a local meat market in Fort Wayne, Indiana USA, in 1894 by Peter Eckrich, an immigrant from Waldsee, Germany. The firm expanded in the local market, becoming a wholesaler in 1907 and incorporating as Peter Eckrich and Sons in 1925. It closed its last retail operation in 1932 and operated exclusively as a wholesale meat vendor. In 1972, thirty years after Peter Eckrich had died, Beatrice Foods bought the firm and merged it into its Swift and Sons meat processing division in 1986 as Swift-Eckrich. Beatrice Foods' brands were sold off over the late 1980s, culminating in 1990 with the sale of many of its brands, including Eckrich, to ConAgra. ConAgra sold Eckrich to Smithfield Foods on October 2, 2006. Then known as Shuanghui Group, WH Group purchased Smithfield Foods in 2013 for $4.72 billion.

When I eat delicious Eckrich smoked sausage, "Chinese food" is not the thing that immediately springs to mind.

OHIO STATE'S DWAYNE HASKINS SPEAKS WITH ALABAMA'S TUA TAGOVAILOA EVERY WEEK AFTER BUILDING CONNECTION IN HIGH SCHOOL
Colin Hass-Hill on October 9, 2018 at 9:20 pm @chasshill

Just a little over a month ago, neither Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins nor Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa had ever started a college football game. They each became heroes for leading their respective teams to comeback wins – Haskins helped the Buckeyes beat Michigan and Tagovailoa played the second half in the national championship win – but neither had any experience starting.

That hasn’t seemed to be much of an issue, if at all, thus far. Now, in the middle of October, the two first-year starting quarterbacks have found themselves pitted against each other in the midst of the Heisman Trophy race.

Both Haskins and Tagovailoa lead undefeated teams ranked in the top three and have put up video game numbers. Their teams will not play this season unless they’re matched up in a bowl game, but if they match up in December or January, bragging rights going beyond just a Heisman Trophy will be on the line.

Even so, they speak every single week, including this past weekend, as the two frontrunners have a relationship dating back before college.

“We sent each other scriptures before the game on Saturday, just send out blessings to each other,” Haskins said on Tuesday.

Football: Dwayne Haskins pays no attention to Heisman talk

There’s no doubt anymore that Dwayne Haskins is in the Heisman Trophy conversation.

After being three yards shy of the school’s record for passing yards, tallying 455 yards and six touchdowns in Ohio State’s 49-26 win over Indiana on Saturday, the redshirt sophomore quarterback not only cemented his name in contention: he launched it to the top, with only Alabama sophomore quarterback Tua Tagovailoa really standing in his way.

In Wednesday’s interviews, Haskins said he tries not to make the award talk his top focus.

“I don’t think I’m paying attention to it, I’m aware of it, more so, but it’s not like my main focus right now,” Haskins said. “It’s just a blessing to be considered with those guys, those are great quarterbacks and we’re all pretty cool with each other, so we’re competing every week.”

Tagovailoa is one of those players Haskins is cool with.

“We talk every week,” Haskins said. “We sent each other scriptures before the game on Saturday, just, you know, sent out blessings to each other, so he did a great job last week.”

Both Haskins and Tagovailoa have their teams to 6-0 records, and both have stats that jump off the page.

Haskins is completing 71.7 percent of his passes for 1,919 yards, with 26 touchdowns and four interceptions. Tagovailoa is throwing for a modest 1,495 yards, but on only 101 attempts, and is up to 20 total touchdowns without an interception.

Though the two could be battling for the NCAA’s top prize, Haskins said it isn’t a competition between the two.

“No competition, I was like ‘how did you go 10-for-13 for 300 yards?,” Haskins said. “He’s like ‘I don’t know,’ but I mean that’s pretty cool, I wish I could do that one of these games this year.”

I re-watched IU yesterday at lunch. I honestly don't know that I've seen a QB with the combination of functional poise in the pocket, seemingly effortless throws, and accuracy and I know I haven't at tOSU.

he looks like Manny Machado throwing to me

looks effortless but, seemingly, unlimited velocity/distance

I had to read this about five times. So, before the Indiana game we had a grand total of one game with over 400 yards passing in program history? Holy Shit.

To me it mostly speaks to how consistently good OSU has been over the years and somewhat speaks to how underwhelming the QB position has been from time to time.

To have a 400+ yard passer up til say the past few years, meant you were either behind and having to pass a lot or were so completely 1 dimensional you didn't even try to run it.

OSU generally doesn't get blown out and have to start throwing all the time and they also generally have a pretty balanced attack that isn't going to give the opportunity to rack up 400 yards. Also we had a run there when Cooper took over in '88 up until basically Troy Smith when you had exactly 2 QB's good enough to rack up 400 yards (Hoying and Germain). They were both on well balanced and good teams that just didn't need to throw it that much.

Same is generally true even with all the good QB's we've seen from Smith on, they were all competent if not primarily runners and on good teams who had no need to keep throwing in a lot of games.

Haskins is just so unique to OSU it's really interesting to think about
