QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

11W has a nugget this morning

DWAYNE HASKINS COMING BACK? I've shared no fewer than 12 mock drafts in these Skull Sessions, but I'm sharing another one. This time though, it's more about who's absent from the list, not who's on it.

Dwayne Haskins did not Bleacher Report's Matt Miller's list of the top 32 overall players or top-10 quarterbacks in the 2019 class, and here was his rationale:

“Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins is not listed, as school sources do not believe he will enter the 2019 NFL draft.”

That is certainly some news.

Obviously, a lot can change between now and April, but if Dwayne Haskins is already planning to return to school, that certainly doesn't sound like a bad thing.

Oh, and Miller still has Nick Bosa listed as the No. 1 player in the draft, but that just seems like a given at this point.

I still think NFL GM's are so desperate for a QB that he ends up drafted but up to this point all the meta data has been one and done/1st round grade etc.

First we are even hearing whispers of a return.

Hill and DH are going to stay or leave, as I see it, together. There's more risk for them without the other..... at the first sign one leaves, both are gone, IMO.

Mack is largely a crap shoot. Why would DH pin his hopes there? The same for Williams and Garrett (great recruits but no B1G experience and DH has zero incentive to "nurture new talent" in his final season.)

Victor is a helluva talent, but spotty. PSU was amazing, but he remains largely a leaper/red zone guy. Victor COULD be the guy for DH, but is he enough to make him stay? I think not.

Babb, great recruit again, had an ACL in high school, then another...... if you're DH, do you wanna go there for your last year?

Olave has what... 4 or 5 catches? He's good, but again, DH would be nuts to hitch his wagon in his draft season to an unproven talent.

It really does come down to Hill, in my mind. DH MIGHT.... MIGHT stay if Hill stays. If Hill leaves, why would he stay and roll the dice on an even dicier receiver rotation than this year?

I'm trying to look at this from DH's vantage point. He's got a career on Sunday NOW. What's in it for him to risk another year?

I can see what you're getting at, but Mack, Victor, and Olave along with McCall and the TEs is a decent start. Not always going to have an ideal WR core and those players are still an advantage against a lot of teams. And that's before you see improvement from some of the other freshman and sophomores.

Still, I wouldn't blame him at all if he was concerned about the amount of WR experience leaving.

I can see DH not leaving. He is still not comfortable under pressure and I'm sure he and the coaches know that. I lean to seeing him as not a complete player as Cardell. That doesn't project out to a long NFL career.
I would even go so far as to project him as no higher than a third round, and where's the glamour in that. He would also be a project in the League with years to develop, mainly because with the pass rush in todays NFL he wouldn't last a season before being injured. So in a way it doesn't matter which receivers leave, He needs maturity at his QB position. nuf said

We better get Tate more involved then because we don't need Tate leaving.

I think we can get both back if we give Tate 10+ snaps a game
Tate leaving would actually force Urban’s hand to go away from the Zone read with non Dual threat QBs... I’m not saying I want it to happen but when you look at the pipeline and see where we are headed... Tate is just a last gasp... if he succeeds and the OCs leave and we revert back to Zone Read heavy Dual threats ... we’re in deeper crap than if Tate leaves....

Mathis and Miller are much more capable running than Dwayne though... shoot even Baldwin is a better runner I think.

So I think they can still run some. If we lose Tate though we have no ability to change it up if we continue to struggle running the ball.

I agree that DH isn't the complete package yet, but I question whether another year at tOSU helps his development more than being a first year NFL QB. His ultimate goal isn't to face the rush from WI or Indiana but Green Bay or Dallas. What makes you think Day or Alford will "bring him along" toward being an NFL QB with more skill than an NFL QB coach?

Further, if the receiver corps is thinner than this year (and it likely will be,) that invites more blitzes, doubling the tough receivers, quick read decisions, etc..... which ultimately doesn't favor DH at this point. Would he get better for facing it? Absolutely, and he must get better against pressure to have a career, but the question for him is: Do I want to "firm up" my pocket poise/awareness/skills on Saturday? I may potentially make errors that will hurt my draft prospects OR even potentially get Tate the spotlight over me. Why do that?

Tate is nipping at his heels and brings the "pull it down and run" dimension tOSU may need to help keep defenses honest if the receiver corps is spotty. For DH, it's a risk/reward situation that favors taking his chances with the draft and seeing whether he matures at the next level behind the scenes vs staying at tOSU and facing a "trial by fire" that might lower his NFL career chances. Remember, there was Heisman buzz about DH at the beginning of the season which is gone..... and there were (and are) rumblings that Tate should be getting many snaps. Going from a Heisman buzz to a "uh, is this the right guy for us now" buzz isn't a sign your NFL stock is improving.
