QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

Yep, we "found" a quarterback. Was a rocky 3 years as I recall. Also seem to remember that Steve's reputation as a "promising young ass-kicker" made him a fan favorite and consequently had a somewhat significant role in his ascent to the starting spot...
I don't know if mods are able to do this, but I think @3yardsandacloud's signature should be updated to "promising young ass-kicker."

98 against Michigan St. was my low point.

With age comes perspective. I used to not be able to sleep the night before the Michigan game, not anymore.

Anymore, I set the DVR and do stuff out in the yard or play with the kids and come in at halftime.

A family changes your perspective.

I look at it like this, if the worst thing that happens in a day or week is that your favorite team loses, then you've had a good week.

05 Texas was the last straw for me. I was at the 04 Wisconsin game when Zwick and the offense were booed mercilessly the second half. I was in disbelief -- sick to my stomach listening to people around me. By the 05 Texas game, after I read Hamby had received death threats, I realized I needed to do my own little part to back off the ledge, and maybe talk others off the ledge with me.

We're spectators watching kids (and they're not even our kids) play a game.

That was a tough stretch, coming off '02 and a near miss shot at a NC in '03. Then '04 (see embarrassing losses to Iowa) and everyone was in kind of "oh shit we suck again" mode. There was a lot of bad behavior,. Additionally a lot of the Clarett stuff was still a very open wound... and there was very loud, if not real, talk in '04 about Tressel being fired.

I would add that its my opinion that the rise/mainstreaming of recruiting coverage and online message boards happened to coincide with the early Tressel years in such a way that there was, hmm, how to put it, an interesting increase of kind of new bandwagon fans that hadn't really experienced adversity as fans, and as such didn't realize they weren't entitled to only success. You get that any time you go through a really good period, but it seemed particularly ugly then.

I don't know if this has been done in this thread, but I thought it would be useful to post some of J.T.'s career stats and compare them to the guy that will win the Heisman at the end of the week. Everybody knows that Mayfield is so clearly the best player in the country this year, and that J.T. doesn't consistently hit deep throws, so these numbers can't even be close, right?

Player......Year...TDs passing...TDs running...Total... INT's thrown
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mayfield...2013....12................03...............15..........09...........(at Texas Tech)
Mayfield...2015....36................07...............43..........07
Mayfield...2016....40................06...............46..........08
Mayfield...2017....41................05...............46..........05

Barrett.....2014....34...............11................45..........10
Barrett.....2015....11...............11................22..........04
Barrett.....2016....24...............09................33..........07
Barrett.....2017....35...............10................45..........09

Mayfield - total TDs: 150, career INTs: 29, record as starter 39-7

Barrett - total TDs: 145, career INTs: 30, record as starter: 37-6

The differences are greater when looking at passing efficiency rating, but I think most non-Buckeye fans would be very surprised at how close most of those numbers are.

I think the difference there is it looks like Mayfield improved every year where as JT had a good first year and then struggled the next few before finding himself a bit this year.

Man JT had such an opportunity to bury Wisconsin though and just couldn't quite get it done... oh well though he'll still go down the best to do it here.

This is the game I blame for never being able to convert my daughter to a football fan.

I persuaded her to watch that game with me. Before it was over, we had acquired a new family catch phrase that was our version of "the definition of insanity." When confronted with appropriately futile situations "I know," she'd say with her voice dripping sarcasm, "let's run it up the middle."

And to think, I've been critical of Trigger warnings in the past...
