QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

J.T. BARRETT'S EXPERIENCE WILL BE INVALUABLE FOR OHIO STATE IN 2017

For the first time since the 2006 season, Ohio State will have a senior starting quarterback. And as a fifth year that's seen meaningful action in all three previous years of eligibility, J.T. Barrett is undoubtedly the most experienced quarterback in the country, and that's great news for the Buckeyes.

Through three seasons, there's virtually nothing the Buckeye signal caller has not seen or faced – on the field or off. He's fought through injuries – sometimes playing through them, battled for playing time, dealt with coaching changes, made mistakes off the field, played in front of hostile crowds against the nation's top teams, led his team to thrilling overtime victories and been at the helm for one of the most crushing defeats in recent memory.

But it's not just experience, Barrett's had almost uncanny success through his three years as a starter. The Buckeye signal caller is a ridiculous 26-4 as a starter, 3-0 against Michigan and is perhaps the most decorated quarterback in Ohio State history with 21 school records to his name before his career has even come to a close.

Some fans are quick to call for a change at the position after worse-than-expected offensive production the past two seasons, but with Barrett returning and his track record behind him, one is not coming.

"You see what J.T.'s done," said new quarterbacks coach Ryan Day when asked if Barrett was the clear-cut starter. "It goes without saying."

Older and wiser, Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett gives advice he would’ve wanted to hear

COLUMBUS, Ohio — J.T. Barrett has learned to make a joke about his age.

“I’ve been here a minute now,” the Ohio State quarterback said with a smile. “Everybody has a different path.”

By just about any standard, of course, the redshirt senior is a young man. But graded against the lifespan of a college athlete — particularly a multiyear starter for the Buckeyes — Barrett definitely qualifies as an old guy.

When it was pointed out to him that Tate Martell, the fresh face in his quarterbacks room, was in the eighth grade when Barrett enrolled at Ohio State, that realization brought another grin.

Barrett has compiled an impressive résumé at Ohio State and he has one more season to play. That likely means a lot of victories, but it also means a chance to add to his legacy by passing along knowledge he has acquired since arriving on campus in January 2013.

Of course, claiming a national championship remains the ultimate goal for Barrett. He has NFL aspirations, too. But in some ways, his maturity has allowed him to evolve into a new position for the Buckeyes, somewhere between player and coach, teammate and mentor.

That means sharing some hard-won lessons that he would have loved to give to a 17-year-old version of himself if that kid had walked into the veteran Barrett’s locker room.

Rival Views: Who will win the 2017 Heisman Trophy?
Mike Farrell and Adam Gorney | Rivals.com

FARRELL'S VIEW: J.T. BARRETT, OHIO STATE

Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett will win the Heisman because he plays on the best team in the country, will improve his downfield passing precision and will kill people with his legs. The only problem, perhaps? The schedule. Ohio State has a tough Oklahoma team early led by another Heisman hopeful in Baker Mayfield, and it has Penn State and Michigan on the schedule as potential stumbling blocks. It plays in the best division in college football, so either that is going to bring the best out of Barrett, or he will have a few bad games and slide back.

Sam Darnold is the favorite of many and has a great chance, and you can’t count out Lamar Jackson, the reigning Heisman winner. Saquon Barkley and Derrius Guice are both elite running backs, but I think either their teams will disappoint or in Barkley’s case his own teammate, Trace McSorley, could split the votes with him.

Barrett isn’t anyone’s favorite to win it after an OK season last year, but the Buckeyes make a serious run and he gets much of the attention.

Side note- good to have Austin Ward back on the college football beat. Exclusively covering the Buckeyes is a bonus. Look forward to great content from him.
