QB J.T. Barrett (B1G FOY, All American, Silver Football Award, 3x B1G QBOY, National Champion)

JT wasn't sharp on Saturday and all pertinent parties have acknowledged that. No sense in avoiding that. As I've said before, I think the reason why folks are concerned is because JT will have to be at his very best if we are to win a national championship....merely good won't cut it.

URBAN MEYER SAYS SOMETIMES QUARTERBACK J.T. BARRETT IS OHIO STATE'S 'SECURITY BLANKET'

75243_h.jpg,qitok=Pstj6Ch2.pagespeed.ce.2sorK8Uwc5.jpg

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett carried the ball 26 times for 137 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 38-17 victory over Indiana.

Many believed that was far too many against the Hoosiers. Count Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer as one of those people.

"J.T. had too many carries," Meyer said following the win. "We have to fix it."

Barrett said Monday he felt fine after carrying the ball 26 times against Indiana. No harm was done. But Meyer and Ohio State certainly don't want to fall into the habit of having the quarterback run the ball as much as Barrett did Saturday.

Why does Meyer fall into that habit, though? In his mind, it's simple: The Buckeyes' primary objective is to win games and Barrett is one of Ohio State's best players. When the game gets tight, he wants the ball in Barrett's hands.

"It's part of playing quarterback in this offense," Meyer said. "You're one of the best players in the country so we're going to play you and use you and do what you do well."

"We're aware of it and have to be somewhat intelligent about how we do it, but go win the game."

Meyer used the phrase 'security blanket' following Saturday's game when asked about his tendency to rely a little too much sometimes on his quarterback. Barrett said he's simply doing things the only way he knows how.

"I do what it takes to win," Barrett said. "If that means I run the ball 26 times in order for us to win by 21 points, by golly you best believe I'm going to do that. I don't mind that [Meyer] says that, but he knows I'm doing whatever it takes to win a game."

CHASING HISTORY: TAKING STOCK OF J.T. BARRETT'S ASCENSION UP THE OHIO STATE RECORD BOOK AFTER A SO-SO DAY VERSUS INDIANA

75240_h.jpg,qitok=V12MlfR4.pagespeed.ce.ucg7Eh90OS.jpg

To get you prepped for the season we outlined a host of individual career Ohio State records in potential danger of being eclipsed throughout the course of 2016 and unsurprisingly J.T. Barrett's name came up early and often.

In fact, Barrett was a threat to break or keep a hold of no less than 10 career marks.

Barrett kicked off the season scorching Bowling Green and answered that with a pedestrian game two against Tulsa before blowing up against Oklahoma in Norman.

After a bye week Barrett was back at it tossing four touchdown passes against Rutgers giving him59 for his career at the time, breaking Bobby Hoying's school record of 57 which stood since 1995.

Against Indiana last weekend Barrett wasn't spectacular through the air completing just nine of 21 throws for 93 yards with a touchdown and an interception but he did work on the ground tallying 137 yards with a score.

Heading in this weekend's showdown in Camp Randall, here's an updated look at where Barrett stands in his pursuit of numerous school records.

CAREER PASSING YARDS
With just 93 passing yards versus the Hoosiers, Barrett upped his career total to 4,807 putting him only 283 yards away from overtaking Jim Karsatos (5,089 yards) for ninth place on the school's all-time list.

The subpar passing day against Indiana pushed Art Schlichter's career mark of 7,547 yards even further out of reality – this season anyway – as Barrett would need to average 343 passing yards per game if Ohio State were to play the realistic minimum of eight more games (fail to make B1G championship but play in a bowl) or 274 yards per outing if Ohio State were to make it all the way to the national championship game.

The long and winding road of Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett

Ivan Maisel
ESPN Senior Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The best college football players always make it look easy. But those of us on the outside, willfully desensitized by the glare of the spotlight and the blare of the trumpets, rarely recognize a college player's journey to maturation.

J.T. Barrett has always made it look easy. Two years ago, as a redshirt freshman at Ohio State, Barrett glided into the starting lineup in the opening week after Braxton Miller reinjured his shoulder and went 11-1 as a starter in the Buckeyes' national championship season. This season, Barrett, the old man on a young team, has provided good play and better ballast as No. 2 Ohio State has beaten each of its first five opponents by at least three touchdowns.

But Barrett's four seasons at Ohio State have been framed by four crises, one more serious than the next. A couple of them played out in public, a couple didn't. But all four, and how Barrett responded to them, transformed a quiet kid from Wichita Falls, Texas, into a forceful leader in Columbus, Ohio.

Cont'd ...

I've been guilty of being overly critical at times as well as I too have seen some questionable or late decisions that might cost us against legit teams. Generally,JT has been awesome. I think the reason I worry is that I know that, with the young team we have, JT will need to be spectacular if we are to win it all. So in my mind, he has to carry the load and will have to be more than great if we are to win a National Championship. It's an unfair ask, but I ask anyway.

but i don't think he has to be spectacular. in all honesty, all he needs to do is be jt. he needs to not think about if the wr is running the route correctly or if they are going to catch the ball. if he sees it, he needs to take it like he has his entire career here. if he does that and only that, i really like our chances. if he walks onto the field thinking he has to single handedly win the game... chances are good they've already lost.

one of the things about having this much youth is that at some point he have to stop treating them like they are young and start treating them like we trust them to make the play, even if we don't :P. ready or not, they are the guys we are starting. at some point we have to take the floaties off and let them sink or swim... either that or we go back to just running dave every third play.

you ran the wrong route or dropped the ball? well, not its crunch time and im coming right back to you with the ball. you up for this or is the bench looking rather comfy all the sudden?

I have to disagree with the assessment that Barrett "added to" his Heisman resume against Indiana. Passing line: 9-of-21 for 93 yards.

and i have to disagree with your disagreeing . by the end of the season when every other current heisman hopeful has two or more losses no one is going to remember that jt went 9 of 21 for 93 yards. they are going to remember it was a win and look no deeper than his overall stats at that moment in time.

Well we will forever disagree. JT will have to be dynamite for us to win it all. We will not beat the best teams one dimensional, which is what we are if he is "off". Fortunately JT and the staff seem to know this and are working on it.

Look, I'm a huge fan of JT and was disappointed when Cardale started in place of him last year, but if he doesn't play at his top level (Sparty 2014) we will find ourselves in bad shape.

The play calling against IU put JT in a place to fail in the passing game. Sure he missed a couple, but we didn't use many short routes and rarely used the play action, not to mention we didn't even throw at all on first down let alone first down play action.

Maybe. But, fortunately for us one dimensional still has about 3 or 4 levels with JT, Weber and Samuel with a dose of Dontre Wilson just before lightning strikes with "House" McCall. Yeah, I think we'll be alright.

no worries, not the most significant of disagreements :).

my take is this team will not see another team with the same amount of talent all year. which includes potentially playing their way into the nc game. so with that thought in mind, if everyone just does their job and they do not succumb to mistakes of youth they should win every game they play. though that whole "youth" thing tends to be a tricky adversary :p.

yeah, i completely understand why cardale was named the starter. but not only did i think jt had a better skill set for the type of offense urban wants. but i thought our receiving corps. really suited jt much more than it did cardale last year. i would go so far as to say if devin smith had another year of eligibility cardale doesn't miss a beat from his playoff games and we win another nc. not to mention the loss of herman and the adjustment period the coaches needed. but all of that is neither here nor there. :p
