Mel Kiper Jr.: Trevor Lawrence Would Be Ranked Behind Joe Burrow, Ahead of Tua

Kiper specifically cited Burrow's win over Lawrence in the 2020 National Championship Game but also made sure to note it was more about the reigning Heisman winner's brilliance than any knock on Lawrence

"It's impossible, Rich, to overlook his greatness this year. Look at the competition he faced. And think about this: The pressure he was under, to get the Heisman Trophy and then have to go out and, all eyes on you, expectations through the roof. This was championship or bust for LSU. ... To go out and struggle early—and remember, Clemson looked like they had the answers ... then you get into the second quarter, and from that point on, it was lights out.

"He adjusts, he adapts, he changes. Brady was great to have there as well with him, and they had a lot of talent. But to have no games, zero games, where he had anything that would make you think that there's a chance he may not be as good as we think he is, is why Joe Burrow would be No. 1. I think in any draft. ... I haven't heard anybody that I respect say, 'Burrow, pump the brakes. Pump the brakes. He's not that good.'"

JOE BURROW’S “ASCENSION” WAS INCREDIBLE

Of course, no conversation on former Ohio State players in this year’s draft is truly complete without talking about Joe Burrow, projected to be the No. 1 overall pick on Thursday night. While LSU is the school that will be announced with his name next week, he spent the first three years of his college career at Ohio State, which helped him get to where he is today.

At this point a year ago, though, no one thought Burrow would end up all the way at the top of the board as the premier quarterback in this year’s draft. Nagy, who was in touch with Burrow about potentially playing in the Senior Bowl before he ultimately chose not to participate, said he has “never seen anything like it” in terms of a player’s draft stock soaring from one year to the next.

That said, Nagy believes in hindsight that Burrow already showed the traits to be an elite quarterback even before his Heisman-winning, national championship season at LSU in 2019. It just wasn’t as obvious in 2018 because the rest of the offense around him wasn’t nearly as good.

“I thought Joe was like a third-round pick a year ago,” Nagy said. “So what I did after the Senior Bowl game was go back to rewatch the junior stuff to make sure like ‘Wow, what happened? What was this meteoric ascension as a player?’ And what I realized was I just undervalued him as a junior. His junior tape was pretty darn good. What happened at LSU was they got a lot better around Joe.

“I think one of the false narratives is that Joe just came out of nowhere and was kind of a really average player as a junior. Going back and looking at it, it wasn’t far off from this year’s tape. He was pretty darn good as a junior. So it was pretty amazing to watch. It was really a lot of fun. Like, I’ll never forget the fall of 2019 watching Joe’s ascension. It was awesome.”

Burrow is expected to get a call from the Cincinnati Bengals just a few minutes after 8 p.m. on Thursday, when the 2020 NFL draft – set to be televised on ABC, ESPN and NFL Network – is scheduled to begin.

2020 NFL Draft: Wonderlic test scores revealed, Tua Tagovailoa ranks lowest among quarterbacks, per report

Tagovailoa scored a 13 on the Wonderlic test, the lowest score among the quarterbacks in the 2020 draft class (per The Athletic's Bob McGinn). LSU's Joe Burrow, the projected No. 1 overall pick in the draft, had the third-highest score at 34. Iowa's Nate Stanley scored the highest grade at 40, followed by Georgia's Jake Fromm at 35.

Brett Favre breaks down 2020 NFL Draft quarterback class, calls Joe Burrow a 'can't miss' prospect

Like many, Favre is very high on Burrow

The 2020 NFL Draft features a very intriguing quarterback class. There's Joe Burrow, who is considered a lock to go first overall to the Cincinnati Bengals, Tua Tagovailoa, who is coming off of an injured hip, and then Jordan Love and Justin Herbert -- who are polarizing prospects, but who should also be selected in the first round. There are also quite a few players who will go on Day 2 or 3 that have potential, such as Jalen Hurts, Jacob Eason and Jake Fromm.

On Friday, Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre joined CBS Sports HQ to evaluate this group of young signal-callers -- and like so many others, he is very high on the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner.

"Well, I think Joe Burrow would deserve to be the first pick in the draft if you just strictly base it off of his performance this past year," said Favre. "From a team standpoint, I don't think we ever have seen a team dominate the way they dominated, and obviously he was the leader of that team."

Burrow completed 76.3 percent of his passes for 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns and just six interceptions last season as the LSU Tigers went undefeated and won the College Football National Championship. While LSU went an impressive 10-3 in 2018, Burrow and the Tigers took their game to an entirely new level and blew out virtually everyone they faced in 2019. LSU averaged 48.4 points per game and scored 95 touchdowns over the course of the season

While Burrow is the clear-cut No. 1 quarterback, Favre pointed out that there is some depth to this class. He alerted fans to the fact that teams don't always pick the best available prospect -- especially when it comes to the quarterback position. Teams will select a prospect they feel fits their system well, which makes it hard to predict where exactly some Day 2 or Day 3 players are going to be selected. Favre himself was a second-round pick, taken 33rd overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 1991 draft.

"The thing you have to look at is what a team is looking for in not only a quarterback but in a particular player period," said Favre. "Maybe the best player available is not a fit necessarily for that team and the style of offense or the style of defense that they like to play. A lot of times, a general fan doesn't see or know what the coach, what the organization, what they're thinking and why they went in the direction they did."

There's only one quarterback Favre is completely sold on, however, and the former NFL star says he's almost a sure thing.

"I think Joe Burrow is as close to a 'can't miss' as you can possibly get based on his performance."

Peyton Manning Reveals Advice He Gave Joe Burrow Ahead of 2020 NFL Draft

hi-res-d5c92b2d396b1122b4387b0e8397905f_crop_north.jpg

Presumptive No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow reached out to Peyton Manning to gauge what to expect during his rookie season, and the future Hall of Famer told the LSU product to work on learning how to become a better player.

“Yeah, Joe called me last week. Obviously we have somewhat of a relationship since he came down to our football camp last summer. I try to stay in touch with all the quarterbacks that come down to the camp if I can be a resource for them, especially as they approach their NFL dreams, but what an exciting year Joe had. He called me about some of the things that I tried to do when I was a rookie that maybe he can apply to his NFL career, looks like it’s going to be with to Cincinnati Bengals, and look when I told him I said: ‘Joe, when you’re the first pick in the NFL draft, you are going to a team that has really earned the first pick in the NFL draft.’ There are going to be so some holes there, and there’s a reason the Colts were picking number one that year. There’s a reason the Bengals are picking number one this year. ... So other people have to step up, have to give him some help. But for him I tried to tell him it’s a marathon, not a sprint.

"Look I lost more games my rookie year than I had my entire high school and college career combined. I threw 28 interceptions—that’s still an NFL record. If Joe wants to break that, Hannah, I’d be OK with that. We’d still be friends. But I tried to learn a lot that year. I played every game. Jim Mora never took me out, I learned some things in the fourth quarter of those blowouts about what it took to be an NFL quarterback, and the next year we went from 3-13 to 13-3. That wouldn’t have happened had I not hung in there and kind of learned the ropes as a rookie even though he took some bumps and bruises. So that’s what I tried to encourage Joe and all the NFL quarterbacks, that your rookie year is not gonna be the same as your senior year in college, but if you learn how fast these defensive backs are, how soon you have to get rid of the ball, understand defenses, you can become a better player and really get it going or year or two after that.”Burrow is coming off perhaps the greatest individual season in college football history, throwing for 5,671 yards and an NCAA-record 60 touchdowns against six interceptions while leading LSU to a national championship.

Manning struggled mightily his rookie year while leading an overmatched Colts team, throwing for 3,739 yards and 26 touchdowns against 28 picks. The Colts went 3-13, leading some to wonder if they made the wrong pick at the top of the 1998 draft.

One year later, the Colts were 13-3, and the franchise would miss the playoffs only once over the following 12 seasons.

Burrow is going to a similarly downtrodden franchise. The Bengals went 2-14 last season, as opposing offenses ran roughshod all over their porous defense and their skill-position players were overrun by injuries and disappointing performances.
