I don't get it. Why would the Pirates pay for him to go to college? It's not like he can play baseball at Ohio State and practice and re-join the Pirates later.
Taking care of college tuition and paying a bonus that is higher than slot are two incentives teams use to get a high school draftee to sign. The organization, of course, prefers that the player is a success and helps out their team in the majors.

See Grady Sizemore and Jeff Francoeur for a couple guys who gave up full rides at major college programs (Washington and Clemson, respectively) to pursue baseball.

OSU football: Ex-minor leaguer appears ready to take shot at QB
Tuesday, March 27, 2007 3:35 AM

Another quarterback likely is headed to Ohio State, but not in time to participate in spring practices.

Joe Bauserman, 21, who has spent the past three seasons playing baseball, has applied for admission to Ohio State for the summer quarter, according to the registrar's office.

No spring ball, that's a shame.

I can see the logic in that. Thanks.

Yeah. But I'd imagine they'd redshirt him this year (2007), and he can spring ball next year.

So if he stuck around and used up all of his eligibility his last season would be 2011...and he would be..what...26? 27?

I remember how much I wished I was back at OSU when I was 27.

BTW, go back and reread the first few pages of this thread...interesting considering he has now returned to football.

How often does this happen with baseball players returning to play college football? I know Chris Weinke did it, and he won the Heisman. It's wishful thinking that the same will happen with Bauserman. Does this sort of thing happen often, and we just don't hear about it because they're typically flops in college?

I guess this answers the question of whether we take a QB this class...
