QB Joe Burrow (transfer to LSU, 2019 Heisman Winner, National Champion, Cincinnati Bengals)

SKULL SESSION: WHY JOE BURREAUX CHOSE DEATH VALLEY

From Bruce Feldman of The Athletic ($):

On his visit to LSU last week, Burrow wasn’t concerned about seeing the stadium or anything external. He just really wanted to meet the players and talk football, a person with knowledge of the visit told The Athletic. Burrow spent three or four hours going over his film as well as LSU’s offense, impressing the Tigers’ staff with the way he called protections, made adjustments, connected on tight throws and displayed excellent anticipation. The Buckeyes’ staff also has raved about his character.

My favorite is the “we don’t have cupcakes in the conference”. Well, South Carolina has been trash for a solid 5 years now. Tennessee was 4-8, and their only wins were against cupcakes. Ole Miss and Arkansas were steaming piles of shit last year, as was Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Missouri and Florida who’s records were propped up by their incredibly awful non-conference schedules. Sure, there’s an exception with Florida with their stunning upset of the 4th place team in the Big Ten East, but that win REALLY wasn’t all that impressive once all the dust had settled.

So, hype your conference all you want, but don’t get carried away. There were, at best, three quality teams in the SEC last season, and that trend is likely to carry over to this next season as well.

Joey is a smart kid and he comes from a smart family. I'm still a bit shocked they landed on LSU. Football powerhouse? Yes. Good developer of offensive talent? No.

Outside of RB they've been pretty terrible at getting their guys to perform at elite levels in the college game. I hope Joey can buck the trend, but I'll believe it when I see it. I think Joey will flash but it won't be consistent. Tough conference to put up great numbers if the coaching staff isn't 100% dialed in on a system and strategy that works.

I continue to wish him nothing but the best.

This thread will still have a lot of legs to it.

I think mostly positive.

I genuinely hope it isn’t OSU fans in here talking about LSU destroying what could’ve otherwise been a stat machine at a different school.

Obviously the hope is Haskins and Burrow both have great seasons and we can cheer both on. Haskins is in a MUCH BETTER situation to succeed though.
