QB Justin Fields (2019-20 B1G Off POY, 2020 Silver Football, 2019 B1G CCG MVP, Pittsburgh Steelers)

Showed great arm strength and impressive touch. Looks fast, but almost seemed casual when running. Needs to be much more sudden next week.

His issue is pocket presence and keeping his eyes downfield and committing to either taking off or checking down. Pretty typical stuff for young QBs and very correctable. All in all we should be very excited for the next 2 years.

I honestly wasn't sure after the Spring Game but I'm a believer now.

I'm ok if we baby step it, a little, with him to build that confidence but if it comes down to winning or losing the game, the coaches better freaking unleash him.

Once we got complacent and they knew the run was coming it put us in tough situations. The best part about his game today is, he took some serious shots and got back up. He has to always get back up. Obvious I know but i was impressed with his toughness getting some throws off today knowing he was about to get hammered.

That's all the lull was IMO.

After accounting for 295 total yards (234 passing, 61 rushing) and five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) in his Ohio State debut, Fields was named as the Buckeyes' offensive player of the game for their 45-21 season-opening win over FAU.

I'm just going to macro in my weekly concern: Woody help us if he gets hurt.

2015 offensive coaching
2018 defensive coaching
Baldwin transferring out

Those are my 3 big program cripplers of the past 7 years. If Fields goes down we will struggle to beat anyone left on the schedule outside of Fredo U.

For me it was less about what Fields accomplished and more about how the offense looked after Q1.

I contrast it against Jalen Hurts and come away slightly disappointed. That’s more of a statement about how amazing a playcaller Lincoln Reilly is, and how he always seemingly outs his QB in a position to succeed.

After 1st Q, it felt like Fields was swimming in deep waters a bit.

How many starts does Hurts have? 35? Fields now has 1.

It’s a valid point.....but Hurts could’ve had his first start, and he’d have had single reads wide open all night. That’s just how Good Lincoln is as a playcaller and designer.

And that’s not a knock on Ryan. He’s a great offensive mind. Lincoln is just next level good which is how he just got Mayfield and Murray drafted #1 in back to back classes.

Lincoln Riley also doesn't give a shit about running the QB. Everything opened up for them because they were willing to run Hurts 11 times in the first half alone.

Riley is the best OC in football but jokes on him If Hurts gets injured.

Typical Ohio State "watercooler jock" fan: "I don't know. Maybe 6 or 7 TDs against Cinci and we're gonna start moving the needle for me."

It was a great start.
Don't forget the "after we went up we went all vanilla so other teams don't see our wizardry on tape..."

i basically think what happened is that the coaches realize that in order for the team to be successful this year Fields needs to be able to have options looking down field, which means that running lanes need to be open(d). so i think they were trying to see if the OL can open running lanes under different sets.

the answer to that is, "not there yet. more work to do." and that's what the coaches and players said. not surprising.

BTW, i'd love to see the OL substitutions in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. anybody keep stats like that?
